Talking Billy and JC contribute to Rush film

Saw the new Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage documentary film yesterday. Pretty interesting. Billy was one of the main contributors and had some interesting Rush-related anecdotes, such as how he once learned how to play the entire first side of the album 2112 and how it was so crazy hard that he must've locked himself in his bedroom for a year to learn it. And how when he was 16 he insisted his Mom listen to the song Entre Nous and read the lyrics sheet to it, because the song resonated with him so strongly at that time and he wanted her to see that. Surprised to see Jimmy involved, didn't know he was much of a fan (although obviously Neil Peart is a great drummer). No idea whether he was still in SP when the interviews where filmed as he and Billy appear separately. Billy is sporting some extensive face fuzz, a knitted hat (maybe Cubs, couldn't make out the logo) and of course a scarf.

The fact that you detail Billy's appearance in this post is beyond creepy

We are secrets to each other
Each one's life a novel
No-one else has read.
Even joined in bonds of love,
We're linked to one another
By such slender threads.

We are planets to each other,
Drifting in our orbits
To a brief eclipse.
Each of us a world apart,
Alone and yet together,
Like two passing ships.

Chorus
Just between us,
I think it's time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes fear to show.
Just between us,
I think it's time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room for you and I to grow.

We are strangers to each other,
Full of sliding panels,
An illusion show.
Acting well-rehearsed routines
Or playing from the heart?
It's hard for one to know.

Chorus

We are islands to each other,
Building hopeful bridges
On a troubled sea.
Some are burned or swept away,
Some we would not choose,
But we're not always free.

Chorus

I like their new wave stuff: Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows
Everything else is pretty awful.

I gotta show some love for "Snakes & Arrows"... These guys are old as dirt and still show incredible musicianship.. the production of this album is wonderful..

As far as albums go I think they peaked with Signals. As far as individual songs go they peaked with Mystic Rhythms.

lol. Most Rush fans hate those middle 80's albums. I like Signals as a whole but most of the albums in the 80's from Rush suffered as albums, though each one does have some pretty good songs on them (Between the Wheels from Grace Under Pressure is hauntingly fantastic).

And for about a decade there whenever I went to a Rush show, Mystic Rhythms was the go-get-a-beer-song of the night.

(their latest tours big selling point is that the band is playing this album in it's entirety from start to finish).

Their 8th album and their magnus opus, a result of a label asleep at the switch through the 70's as Rush was allowed to develop with some very obscure work...hints of their more radio friendly mainstream appeal surfaced on the previous album to Moving Picture, Permanent Waves (Spirit of Radio, Freewill...oh, and that Entre Nous song is on that one)

But the previous half-dozen albums they made, all in the 70's, are some of the most experimental art-rock ever attempted; a bunch of concept songs over 13 minutes long with a couple over 20 minutes long that would tell stories written off of Ayn Rand novels and middle age mysticism.

Had their label reps not been so fucked up on drugs at the time, they probably would of dropped Rush at some point back then...as it was, they in many ways are the last band that was allowed to develop for a half-dozen albums before the label saw a reasonable mainstream act that became a Platinum album standard of a band.

Experimental my ass. There's nothing experimental on writing 13-20 minutes long songs. It's just writing long songs, they might be good or bad or cheesy as fuck.

Billy already crossed that line and clearly explained it in the Beach Boys biography.

that's the only album they did without Neil Peart. Lemme guess, Adore is your favorite Pumpkins album too?

Rush may be cheesy, but it's still the best dungeons and dragons rock out there.

Alright. It's Friday night. I have no date, a 2-liter bottle of Shasta, and my all-Rush mixtape. Let's rock!

most of what The Omega Concern says is true. the first album is undoubtedly their worst as they were lacking a key band member. i love the 70s prog rock albums, though admittedly there is quite a lot of stuff that doesn't really work, like most of the 2nd side of 2112. Rather, A Farewell to Kings is their first consistent album imo and like Omega says Permanent Waves is the first genuinely accessible record, with Jacob's Ladder a great song amongst many. Moving Pictures is probably the high point. I love the 80s material, from Signals through to Hold Your Fire...Between the Wheels is a favourite, though Prime Mover is cool too. Presto and Roll the Bones are more uneven and I have always failed to engage with the later albums, though i listened to Snakes & Ladders a lot before seeing them on that tour and the musicianship is indeed fantastic. I love Peart's skills but for me Beer Time is during his solo...

I know the material good enough, I haven't said that I don't like it. Those 70s album are ok, I like 2112 and specially Farewell to Kings. But saying they are experimental is complete wankery. Eno was experimental around that time, Crimson, Bowie, those german prog bands... but Rush?
