Show was much better than expected. I was originally told that BC would only sing 1 song, but he was out for 3. But he was definitely playing backup to Mavis Staples, so BC did not take charge much (he did sing one verse by himself, and got into it a bit more during some of the choruses).

Also, Mavis performed 2 songs at the beginning of the show with her band before Billy joined her at the end of the show.

Setlist (Mavis Staples w/band):

Eyes on the Prize (Staples original I think)
The Weight (The Band cover)

---------------------------------------------------------------

Setlist (Mavis Staples with Billy backing):

For What It's Worth (Buffalo Springfield cover)
Will the Circle Be Unbroken? (traditional song, pretty old I think? I I dunno who originally wrote it, but Mavis introduced it as the first song that the Staples Singers ever learned)
I'll Take You There (Staples Singers)

Billy commented that the crowd was not very "punk rock". He danced a bit, and seemed to be enjoying himself.

He was in a great mood after the show, very gracious to everyone who talked to him. Thanks Billy!

The 7 year old pianist Emily Bear performed 4 piano pieces, which were fantastic.

Emily Bear setlist:

Girl From Ipanema
Out of Control (Emily Bear original)
Nothern Lights (Emily Bear original)
??? (I forget what this was, but Emily introduced it as "a surprise")

The a capella group Straight No Chaser kinda sucked... they did 3 or 4 songs. First one was OK, the others were blah. They said one was from 1984, something about Africa, but I didn't recognize it I don't think.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra trumpet section played some nice music as well.

Second City did a couple skits, mildly funny at best.

Also, before any of the pathetic lowlives who languish here in misery flame me, I got hooked up with free tickets for this event. So no, I did not pay $125 to see Billy on backup vocals for 3 songs, although I was prepared to do so if needed. However, I do plan to make a donation to WTTW, since it was a nice event, and they provide quality TV.

2009: let's stay POSITIVE (as Billy told us). Thanks Billy.

EDIT: note about "Will the Circle", and Mavis's setlist before Billy joined later

Nice review, thanks for sharing. Did billy talk at all about how the songs were coming along or did he just talk about god and being positive?

True, but it also usually correlates with him being depressed (or maybe it's just old age now). It looks like the same stars shirt he wore back in 2007(?) for zeitgeist.

Update from sp.com

Quote:
He talked to fans for a good thirty minutes about a little of everything: the direction the band is taking now, his excellent relationship with Jimmy, and even about the new albums and his ideas for starting two other bands. What did he say? We can't tell, we were sworn to secrecy! But I can say, that like his blog post, Corgan really is full of hope, light, and love. It was refreshing and a very positive night for everyone in the room.
JRiordan, is this true? and why were you sworn to secrecy?
