Default Anyone seen the new documentary on Woodstock 99?

I have a morbid fascination with this bizarre event.

The documentary is on HBO and is pretty good in my opinion. There's quite a lot of footage I've never seen anywhere else, in particular of the turmoil on the festival grounds aside from the stages. There is already loads of professionally shot footage that was broadcast live on pay-per-view, but it mostly focuses on the performers. I'm mostly interested in the coverage of the masses of people and the rapid deterioration of the atrocious conditions, which the documentary shows quite a lot of.

A lot of people have criticised the doco for being too "woke" but I think it's mostly on the mark.

I was gonna post a few of my favourite Youtube videos from various sources but it seems like a lot are getting taken down. Muchmusic had a good video which included interviews with the artists. There was a really good video shot by an attendee, similar to the one above, of the rioting and fires, but with a kind of amateur news correspondent tone, interviewing other attendees and documenting the looting and destruction.

this guy recently uploaded three hours worth of his own personal footage

comes across as a major creep being sure to get lots of shots of the women and saying "CHECK OUT THE TIDDIES ON THAT ONE"

he could have been a perfect fit as a camera operator for the PPV

Smashing Pumpkins were invited to perform at Woodstock 99, but I think Billy said it looked too commercial or something

imagine Smashing Pumpkins playing this festival

watching it now....

Dexter Holland looks soooo old. I met him about 7 years ago and he looks 20 years older in his interview for this doc.

I forgot how truly shitty the line-up was for that concert. There's a scene where Moby is complaining about how he wasn't billed on the sign at the Gate, and they show the board with all the band names and it's like a laundry list of every shitty Nu Metal band that existed.

It's not surprising that it became a nightmare because it attracted every 20 year old angry misogynist backwards cap wearing frat boy in the country with that list of bands!

"Nu metal embraced the troglodyte elements" - Moby

I've never liked Moby, but his comments in this film are spot on. He talks about how sad the 90s were because they started with Nirvana and seemed so primising... and then it ended with frat boy rape music

Only 3 female acts out of 100 bands

All i remember is that most of what was big on the radio, just like in the 80s, was terrible.

I think it was marginally better than the 80s overall.

the Netflix doco is actually pretty decent, and better than the HBO doc overall. it has a bit less of an angle, and is somewhat more focussed. it hits many of the same beats when covering the culture of the time, but the Netflix doco doesn't dwell on it as much. i think almost everyone who was interviewed actually attended and/or worked at the festival. there's plenty that one doco covers that the other doesn't so they complement each other quite well. Micheal Lang and John Scher come across as complete bumbling children as usual, heavily downplaying the numerous issues and deflecting blame.
