I often try to write things on acoustic or unplugged electric guitars because I figure that if it's a good piece of music unadorned, then I know it's good.

Like, take a look at all those modern shoegaze bands with cool sonic textures and dialed-in effects, but boring-ass songs that go nowhere. They wouldn't have that problem if they wrote their songs on an acoustic guitar before playing with their reverb pedals for three hours.

Of course, there are plenty of legitimately great songs that sound good because of their particular effects and would not be the same song on an acoustic guitar. I understand that the rule of "it's gotta sound good on an acoustic" will close off the possibility of writing one of those songs. But, it's the tradeoff I make to prevent myself from doing the much more likely thing of settling for boring ass songs that are unmemorable and meandering despite having a nice toanz.

Also, I am not claiming that I actually succeed in writing good songs most of the time. I'm just saying, my approach is to not settle for a bad one and call it a day. 99% of the time, I walk away with nothing.

"Cherub Rock" actually features unprecedented modal interchange and complex polymetres. One part is written in 11/7 time signature.

most of the music we hear is equal temperament, so 12 divided notes. it's the pitches that exist in between those notes. On a guitar if you bend a note slightly out of tune you're bending it to a microtone.

and microtonal guitars are a thing that exists. Think King Gizzard or Horse Lords if you wanna hear how it's used in a band context.

Anytime King Gizzard is brought up I immediately stop paying attention and also discredit the person bringing them up

Meanwhile RHCP have retained their popularity and just put out two albums that sound like quintessential RHCP. Maybe because they're still a real band?

Check out the track 'Eddie' from Dream Canteen.

Tbh it's easier when all you've ever done is jumping around wild-eyed playing half-baked funk riffs and that one ballad.

We knew the bar was always going to be set unreasonably high for the Spunks.

juys.... FYI (as the authority here)... throwing in a bent note here and there, does not make it mircrotonal.

just like playing an accidental, doesn't mean you're playing 12-tone jazz.

sheeeeeeeesh.

the backing "disney vocals" does not make it a microtonal composition. they're just pulling at the pitch to then provide resolve.

If you want to get into the grit of it... what is actually happening here is a chord change in a Just intonation system. that C# chord (tritone chord) in a key of G is made up of ratios that are are as far "out of tune" as just intonation goes. falling to the Cmaj7 (IV) is such a "returning to nice harmonic", and then the G (I) is absolute musical perfection (As far as classical composition goes). That C# is NOT microtonal.

at the other end of the spectrum, fuck twits would then try to to argue that equal temperment is "microtonal" because the cents aren't just.... anyone that actually studies or composes in microtonal systems will laugh you out of the class. These are all just 12 tone systems. (I'm reminded of too many "r/badmath clowns) . Billy is kind of a musical r/badmusictheory. He thinks it's "rock and roll" to re-invent.. but sometimes it's just stupidity. Like spelling Mayonaise wrong because he didn't know how it was spelt - uh,,, look it up you lazy twit.

Bla bla bla

there is no quintessential smashing pumpkins sound. every album of the golden era sounds drastically different. the best case scenario would be songs that sound like shiny/cyr/atum but first of all, much less of them, and second of all, highly refined and rehearsed

Gish - PI - Siamese - MCIS - TAFH

These albums all sound more cohesive than those that followed. I take your point but most people associate the Pumpkins with SD - MCIS era.

From an album standpoint yes, but the combo of Strat and Les Paul + Marshalls is THE Smashing Pumpkins sound. It doesn't even have to be Lace Sensors or Big Muffs. And coincidentally it's the base rig for the golden era up to 1996.
