Really, really tight. And yeah, loud for sure, though nothing compared to Sunn O))) (predictably). I sort of thought they might be considered sort of derivative by people who knew their shit but they seemed to go down well with the crowd. I enjoyed them and I'm not someone who listens to much of that stuff at all, for what that's worth. |

converge is far more brutal than mastodon, not to say they are better
mastodon is very clean and accessible by all accounts |

RE: Converge vs. Mastodon: silly comparison anyway really but in terms of consistency and brutality its Converge all the way.

well now that you mention how crazy the comparison is, Dark Horse strongly reminds me of Mastodon

i heard mastodon sucked at bonnaroo. they were good at scion rock fest but following neurosis it was a letdown.
here's two of btbam's older songs, off of the silent circus and alaska... considered by many older fans to be their pinnacle: |

i'd choose for converge too, if i'd had to choose between those two. converge has three excellent albums and Jane Doe is one of my all time favourites. It took me a long time to get into Converge, mostly because of the vocals. they are completely indecipherable and it sounds silly at first but it's something you get used to. I have to say I like his singing style in songs like Last Light where he's not completely frying his larynx the most.
I think I like half of Axe to Fall but it's pretty disappointing compared to their previous work. After song number 5 there's a few really mediocre ones and I don't like the quieter songs at the end either. Apparently Kurt Ballou from Converge wrote a riff that Brent from Mastodon used for Crack the Skye. An album that I don't like at all. Kurt Ballou wrote it for Reap What You Sow originally but didn't use it because the song would have suffered from too many ideas. |

Shrinebuilder ftw.
you guys hear the new Shrinebuilder album that just came out? its pretty fucking badass. lineup is Dale from Melvins on drums, Al Cisneros from Sleep on bass and vocals....plus Scott kelly from Neurosis and that Wino dude from The Obsessed on guitars and vocals.
i got tickets for the upcoming show in chicago (next saturday!!!) and at this point i can't stop listening to the new disc on repeat. i'm really digging it. check it out (not my link): Shrinebuilder (2009) |

and in response to a fair bit of bannon-bashing in this thread: yes, you can't understand what he's saying most of the time. But a) listen to that yowl, that guy feels the fucken pain like Johnny Cash or something; b) even if he gets a bit emo from time to time, the guy is the best lyricist in hardcore, period. |

It probably didn't hurt that i was in a totally fucked breakup when i discovered them. I've been embracing my inner emo kid for a while now. But damn man, every time i read the lyrics to Jane Doe or The Saddest Day i bit my lip and shed a single, totally manly tear.

NIN have released full length hi-quality audio and video from their Webster Hall full-length performance of The Downward Spiral for free here: This One Is On Us - Fan Created 2 x DVD/BluRay Release of Nine Inch Nails Live: 2008 if anybody is interested. I don't really have any interest in the video but i'm listening to the audio now and it fucking kills.

get Hvis Lyset Tar Oss ("If The Light Takes Us", which is the title of a cool new BM documentary). It's only 4 songs but he called it a full-length and it certainly plays like one. Easily his best fusion of the hypnotic stuff and the pummeling stuff.

how do you guys feel about The Dillinger Escape Plan? I don't think i've ever talked to anybody on netphoria about them, but they're easily one of my favourite heavy bands. I have never, ever, ever seen a show as mindblowingly epic as theirs, and i adore each of their records. They seem to share a fair bit of a fanbase with Converge.

Oh god everyone please get the Animals as Leaders self titled debut. It's a solo project by guitarist Tosin Abasi, and I saw him open up for BTBAM. Quite simply, the most talented guitarist I've ever had the pleasure to watch play.
This makes any album put out by Russian Circles completely obsolete. Last edited by Dogfighter28 : 11-23-2009 at 02:44 AM. |
