Default Beguiled is their biggest hit since 2007

via Billboard: Currently charting #10 on mainstream rock and #8 on US Rock Airplay. Peak positions as of this week. It's a very positive sign that their position has increased steadily since the release. And rare for a band that's been around this long.

Maybe even more impressive is that Tarantula (peak #6 in 2007) was in the web of the hype of the comeback album, well before anyone knew what to expect.

Maybe they know what they're doing after all.

you're missing the point. the single is an indisputable success. a lot of people are listening to it. it does not matter at all what the other big songs are right now. they're back at the top of the charts (the industry-standard metric for success). that's a huge victory for the band no matter what you happen to think about the song.

it's only positive.

Except these are just top airplay lists and not actual streams/sales. It only means the song is being played at the right time of day when people are tuned in to the radio.

"Billboard’s radio charts are compiled using information tracked by Nielsen Music, which electronically monitors radio stations in more than 140 markets across the United States. The Nielsen Music system looks for an audio fingerprint, i.e. a characteristic that differentiates a song from all of the other ones that it tracks.

Certain airplay charts are based on the number of plays that each song received in a given format that week: Mainstream Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40, Alternative, Triple A, Active Rock, Heritage Rock, Mainstream Rock, Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop, Rhythmic, Adult R&B, Christian AC Songs, Gospel Songs, Dance Airplay and Smooth Jazz Songs. Others are based on audience impressions: Hot 100 Airplay, Rock Airplay, Country Airplay, Rap Airplay, Christian Songs, Latin Airplay and Latin airplay charts.

The audience charts cross-reference Nielsen Music data with listener information compiled by the Arbitron ratings system to determine the approximate number of audience impressions made for each play. Thus, a song that plays at 4 a.m. does not count as much as one played at 4 p.m., and a station with a large audience will influence the chart more than either a station in a smaller market or one with a specialized format that attracts less audience.

With few exceptions, stations tracked for Billboard by Nielsen Music are commercial stations."

These airplay charts do not equate sales or actually being any good. For example, Rocket and Today both only reached 28 on Mainstream Rock Airplay while Cherub Rock reached 23 and Zero only peaked at 15 and Thirty Three at 18. Meanwhile Solara peaked at 26 and G.L.O.W. at 25.

You really think Beguiled is more popular? I guess this means ATUM is gonna be bigger than Siamese Dream.

seeing these numbers & being reminded that Nickelback is still a thing really reminds me of the Garth Brooks situation - you may meet a fan or two of his every now & then if you live in the south or rural area, but to account for the absurd amounts he sells both album & concert-ticket-wise you can only imagine these people are hiding somewhere, emerging only occasionally to crawl out to the nearest Wal-Mart for the latest GB release. like cockroaches putting up numbers for this shit. there are ATUM cockroaches

yeah i really think the tide is turning in their favor this time around.. and i have a feeling ATUM isn't going to be panned in reviews.

the last few shows were all really positive from what i saw. lots of young kids, singing along to beguiled (at least in my section).. i have some students that are wearing their shirts.. shit i wasn't seeing even a few years ago.

Then these kids will stream the album and wonder where the guitar is. Beguiled is an advertisement for an album that doesn’t exist.

Twenty songs to go. TWENTY. Not including the ten on the vinyl release that BC said sounds nothing like the rest of the record. The psychedelic album within an album. For a lot of bands, that's two or three records. Years of output. We don't know what Atum is yet.

Remember when billy spammed up the video with dozens of unknown people so nobody would know who's in the band?

So weird to see these charts. None of that music is stuff I listen currently, and I really don't like the slick sound of much of this music. That song by Ghost is the best on this list, in my opinion.

Good heavy rock from this year: black midi, The Bobby Lees, Dead Cross, The Afghan Whigs

My favorite albums this year: Raw Data Feel by Everything Everything, WE by Arcade Fire, Unlimited Love by RHCP, Bellevue by The Bobby Lees

This cannot be fucking real. You grabbed a chart from 2002 and threw Beguiled at the end as a joke, right?

... Right?

LMAO Mainstream Rock and US Rock Airplay made little sense in 2007 and now don't mean jackshit.

Godsmack, Bush, Nickelback, Falling in Reverse...it's an indian reserve with very small numbers.

There’s a lot of glass half full here. That’s fine but given that Cyr was 20 songs and really no surprises or highlights (aside from that ‘swoon’ track) I think we can say that Atum is probably going to trend the same way. We’ve already heard half of it when you i,nclude Beguiled, Harmageddon, Avalanche, and Neophyte. Also didn’t someone say that so called ‘psychedelic’ album hasn’t even been recorded yet? I wouldn’t hold out much hope for that. Doubt Corgan would just toss off his best work as some bonus disc.
