So are the folks who were digging Shiny Vol 1 still digging it?
Just curious if the positive reaction might have been a new album rose colored glasses phenomena.
The only song that made it on to my music devices was Silvery and when it comes on now I realize that it's actually a pretty lame song. I don't know why I kinda liked it before, it's not very impressive. How does the material stack up for y'all today? |

And on the other side of the silver dollar, is there anyone out there who didn't like the material initially who now really digs it?

I have approximately the same impression I did when it came out. Main thing that has changed contextually is that I changed my ranking of SP2 albums because Zeitgeist is actually kind of good

thought it was ok upon release, still think it's ok but dunno if i'd ever listen to it as a whole again
"With Sympathy" & a couple others are best of SP2 material tho |

i have some positive memories of some of the parts of certain songs like Travels, Silvery, With Symp
but why ruin them by actually listening to the album again. I always get mad at the BS lyrics |

I threw it on the other day and my impression remains the same. It's good in a few spots, all right in others, and in some places terribly disappointing.

I've not listened much past initial few spins. Played Marchin On the other day though and still liked that. So. Yeah.

Good:
With Sympathy Silvery Sometimes Marchin On' OK: Travels Solara Seek Terrible: Knights of Malta Alienation The album has no cohesion, builds no momentum, and feels conceptually blank. It's less than the sum of its parts, which are scant quantity and uneven quality. The good stuff is better than anything SP2 did. The OK stuff "feels" like SP should feel, but each song botches something major in the execution (lyrics on travels, production on solara, and seek just feels like they didn't finish writing the song, which sticks out even more since it's the closer). The bad stuff shows us the type of music Billy can't pull off anymore (the weirdness of Knights comes off as awkward rather than weird, the epic feel of Alienation comes off as flatulent rather than epic). The good songs are not perfect, but seem to approximately meet my best expectations for what I reasonably expected from Billy & co at this point. |

of all the reviews of this album i've yet to read, this is without a doubt closest to my own
tho i'd probably just put Malta in the "ok" category |

I'm digging it. "It" being a hole in my backyard to bury that stinky turd of a record.

I went back and relistened for the first time in years (the full version, not the red version) and I honestly think it would be a decent effort if the production and mix weren't so bad

Zeitgeist is fine. Silver version is good - any version with Stellar or at least Ma Belle, really

Is fatslug that little fat bobby hill sounding redneck kid who posted a couple videos of himself struggling to destroy a burnt cd of Zeitgeist?
I remember watching those videos a couple of times in 2007/2008 and I've tried to find them since, but no luck. I'd love to hear that kid's review of Monuments. Although he definitely isn't a kid anymore.... |
