Default Deftones album review that compares them to Pumpkins

http://www.spin.com/reviews/deftones...-yokan-reprise

Deftones always have gotten praise for their (modest) curiosity, but they were always less like reigning magpies Radiohead and more like Smashing Pumpkins — a more minimal, more focused, and much heavier Smashing Pumpkins, as devoted to operatic emotional intensity, but less distracted by stupid bullshit. It's their sensuality, not their experimentation, that's carried them all the way from 1995 to 2012 intact. Deftones songs envelope you in an amplified wash, a swaddled state in which every emotion is stretched to the dramatic width of one of frontman Chino Moreno's vowels, then swept majestically away.

This.
Shut up with your prolix verbal diarrhea and get to the fucking point already. Your inane music reviews are ruining my enjoyment of Fresh Air. English majors are also evil incarnate BTW.

i was just defending english majors in general
i'm fairly certain whoever wrote that was either not an english major or a not particularly attentive student

this thread annoys me though because it implies like this is some brand new thing

there have been deftones/pumpkins comparisons ever since white pony

The comparisons are stupid. Why isn't it good enough to say that people who are fans of bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins and who also happen to enjoy their heavier and darker side may also enjoy The Deftones?

Trots what is this about calling any aspect of MCIS nu-metal? I brought that up about Machina with particular regard to a certain few songs on the record and moreover their live sound at the time, but it seems a very strange label to apply to MCIS.

Not exactly. I was pointing out the difference between rock critics who feel the need to constantly play one band off the other, as if there needs to be some sort of direct competition between the two (as if they play the same style of music, which they clearly do not) rather than to just accept that they are horses of different stripes with perhaps some areas of broad stylistic overlap which may lead one who enjoys some particular aspect of band X to also enjoy band Y if that is the appeal for them.

Nu metal is like dance music for 14 year old boys with an aggressive streak. Most of it was actually made with moshers in mind.

Machina is also alternative metal. Everlasting Gaze, Imploding Voice, and Heavy Metal Machine are not nu metal in the slightest.

I think Machina could also be considered post-grunge at times. Age of Innocence and Wound have that feel.

But I don't think that SOAD are really very nu metal...yes, alt metal most definitely, with a strong element of punk and thrash thrown in.

I think of nu metal as having a more shiny, glossy straight forward anthemic sound which tends to emphasize hyperbolically low tuned rhythm guitar and often includes elements of industrial, electronic, and/or hip-hop. Korn, Limp Bizkit, (early) Incubus, Static X, Saliva, etc. were nu metal.

Could someone please explain the main difference between nu metal and nu rock/post-grunge to me?

If slipknot is nu metal and silverchair is post-grunge, what is try, try, try?

And yes, I am that stupid.

Deftones Frontman Chino Moreno Recommends Five Non-Metal Albums for Metalheads

Smashing Pumpkins
Siamese Dream
(Virgin, 1993)
“Billy Corgan’s vocals were more soothing when Butch Vig produced him; after that, he started to get all fucking whiny. But he definitely influenced Team Sleep in the beginning. A lot of that guitar shit on that record is beautiful. When we play live, that whole wall of guitar thing that he had is what we try to go for—heavy, but also soothing, like it hugs you.”
