Red face CURVE.

Rick Beato recently featured Curve on one of his videos, and I can't believe I've never heard of them! Alan Moulder worked on this album immediately after Loveless, and had a long term relationship with the band. This sounds years ahead of what was going on in 1992 when it was released.

Embarrassed to say I discovered this band when a remix of "Chinese Burn" featured in the trailer for the first X-Men movie back in…what was that, 2000? 2001?

But yeah, I blasted Doppelgänger and Come Clean out of my car speakers for several years

This is from fucking 1991 Butch Vig was still recording Gish when this band wrote the book for Garbage.

This is pretty interesting. It's not really all that different from most of what their contemporaries were doing but just by virtue of having a noticeable bit of Loveless in its blood while obviously being written to be something far more palatable commercially than that record was, it works very well as a conduit for illustrating the influence on that (fairly weird/abrasive) band on other (much less weird/abrasive) music which at first glance it doesn't bear that much resemblance to.

My problem with most shoegaze bands is that I started out with MBV. That set the bar really, really high.

I described shoegaze on twitter as "a series of low-stakes flings you get into with people who remind you of your one true love (MBV) but they never stack up"

I think Curve mixed 3 vital elements for the first time: shoegaze guitars, electronica beats, and an alternative rock frontwoman.

I think my problem with contemporary shoegaze bands is that so many of them just sound like MBV or TJaMC cover bands. You have to really dig to find somebody doing something new.

It's easier to get into some of the earlier bands, IMO. Though I've only listened to a bit of Curve so far

There are only three MBV albums and a handful of EPs. If the best band in the world aren't going to produce more music, then I am content with pale imitations.

For my money, Medicine has a similar sound (in some of their songs it's more pronounced) and is much better than Curve.
