There's songs that definitely hint at them wanting to get away from that shit entirely - overall i guess i'd say it was really a kind of "one foot in one foot out" kinda record, in terms of its association w/ that genre

either way, s'prettay good!

Well deftones aren’t nu metal so your premise is flawed!!

What’s your fav deftones record?

I honestly think mine is koi no yokan which does not appear to be a super common opinion.

Koi's probably my second favorite to be honest, fuckin love that record

my personal favorite for the past few months has been Diamond Eyes, if only because i love every single song on it and can listen to it front to back the easiest of any of their records

I got a first pressing of adrenaline a few weeks ago (without realizing it was a first pressing whoops) and that completed my vinyl discography. One of these days I’m gonna sit and listen to all of them in a row. Their evolution is really stunning.

They're from that scene/era, though. Korn and Deftones are ground zero for that shit.

White Pony is still my all-time favorite; Diamond Eyes is pretty damn close, though.

They've only really "dipped" once, imo

and that was on their last album, Gore. The songs aren't bad but the mix is horrible. Saw 'em live twice in 2015 & 2016, the '16 performance blew the other out of the WATER but i think a lot of that had to do w/ the venue just being a lot more complimentary to their sound & louder bands in general

hell, i even met 4/5 of them after the gig that night, not even trying!

Stephan was really, REALLY down to earth for a millionare who's been in the "biz" for over 2 decades

They all were, honestly, only one I didn't get to meet was Chino cos he got into the bus way earlier than the rest of 'em. When Abe came out I told him the show was amazing & he looked at me and said "thanks, man" in a way one might do after their very first gig - it really took me off guard, lol

I’ve never really seen them on a proper tour. Well once I think after self titled? But last two times they were openers in shitty venues. Lame.

Gore is great, but I agree, the mix is for shit. They should give that one the Rush/Vapor Trails remix treatment.

cool!

what do you think is so bad about the mix? I don't really hear it, production just got bigger and bigger over time and it's not necessarily my cuppa but I do enjoy the later albums

i love the bigness of Diamond Eyes, Koi No etc but the guitars basically sound like white noise & in comparison to past albums the drums are pretty "limp dick"

in any case, some of the songs are good to great but it's their worst sounding record for me since Adrenaline. Rubicon fuckin' owns tho

I think they've discussed it - as it is they've put out at least one song from it, "Smile" which is excellent
