Default New bands that sound like the pumpkins (more or less)

I've been following the music press talking about new(ish) bands that sound like the Pumpkins - in their opinion anyway. I made 2 playlist with 20 bands each, some of them actually say the pumpkins were a big influence.

Playlist 1

01 Bully - Trying
02 Wolf Alice - Bros
03 Screaming Females - Hopeless
04 Ratboys - Not Again
05 Perfume Genius - Queen
06 Violent Soho - Dope Calypso
07 The Joy Formidable - Whirring
08 PACESHIFTERS - Drone
09 Milk Teeth - Melon Blade
10 Adventures - Heavenly
11 Cymbals Eat Guitars - Warning
12 Field Mouse - Everyone but You
13 Pinegrove - New Friends
14 Teenage Wrist - Slide Away
15 CLOAKROOM - Seedless Star
16 Superheaven - I've Been Bored
17 Emma Ruth Rundle - Arms I Know So Well
18 Silversun Pickups - Circadian Rhythm (Last Dance)
19 Night Flowers - Neverlands
20 Big Jesus - SP

Playlist 2

01 Lazy Day - With My Mind
02 Nothing - Zero Day
03 Pink Frost - Traitors
04 Animal Flag - St. Cecilia's
05 Postblue - Lights and Sounds
06 Windowspeak - When I Tried
07 Waxahatchee - Silver
08 Trementina - Hazy Youth
09 Soft Science - Undone
10 Lev Snowe - Dream Away The Night
11 Plastic Flowers -How Can I
12 Moaning - Misheard
13 Ringo Deathstarr - Heavy Metal Suicide
14 Gleemer - Gauze
15 Narrow Head - Nodding Off
16 Deafcult - B to A
17 Seasurfer - Confusion
18 Infinity Girl - Dirty Sun
19 Palehound - I get Clean
20 Snail Mail - Pristine

I'm preparing playlist number 3, but I'm not sure when that one will be ready! Enjoy!

Yes, Joy Formidable and Silversun Pickups are totally new bands. Thanks for the hot tip.

This reminds me of when fuzzy introduced us to Modest Mouse, who are pretty good for a modern band.

I've noticed people tend to relate the Pumpkins sound exclusively to SD, which means fuzzy guitars in general and sometimes to nasal androgynous vocals. No one says an electronic band sounds like Adore.

In any case, I really enjoy a couple of those bands:

Snail Mail
Cloackroom
Nothing
Narrow Head
Wolf Alice
Superheaven
Violet Soho

you might have upset him - when I saw them around the same year at a festival he screamed his way through all the songs even though none of them were particularly angry

I never really got the SSPU/SP comparison. Big fan of both bands but I don’t think they sound anything alike.

And Perfume Genius? I like him too but his music doesn’t remind me of Billy at all.

They sound alike in a general way, i.e. big wall of sound guitars, androgynous vocals, psychedelic and dreamy rock music. They aren't super similar, but the comparison holds because SSPU has been open about being extremely influenced by the Pumpkins. they do have some songs that sound a lot like them

Brian Aubert plays guitar like he knows a lot of SP covers. He does a lot of Billy's favorite techniques frequently

SSPU is also really good live although I felt like their music peaked at "this is pretty good," and then went downhill

In their early tours they just screamed the whole thing and played really heavy feedbacky shoegaze style

Saw em a year or two ago they don’t do that anymore thank god

Yeah, I mean, I understand the whole androgynous vocals thing and some of the guitar sound I guess but I still think they sound different enough that the frequent comparisons feel like a stretch to me. Eh, I guess it doesn't matter. I like them both. I'd kill to see them play a show together.

Just getting around to trying these and I wanna say it whips ass that you put the work into doing this; thank you very much

I don't follow new music much, so this is introducing me to a ton of bands that I'm diggin'

I saw SSPU play a bill with Garbage and Alabama Shakes and some other bands.

but like, it started raining before Garbage and SSPU so they let people leave until it cleared up; so we went to a nearby gas station, loaded up on booze, and no one was searched coming back in. i got really drunk from my little bottle of vodka that i only remember Garbage's set and by the beginning of SSPU, I was like noticeably wobbly trying to stay standing; so i stayed to hear 'Lazy Eye' and left.

on paper it sounds awesome, sure, but in practice it was like "we want to be aggressive but all we have is this box of limp-dick indie pop"

Teenge Wrist and Narrow Head are the only two newer bands that sound remotely like Pumpkins. That playlist had a lot of shitty riot grrl wannabes.

I saw em 2 or 3 times in 2007-2009 or so and they were very very good each time.
