someone said it earlier, but nirvana just didn't age well. like a lot of music from *thattime*. duurrrr. they were grunge incarnate, there was no way for them to really progress as a band.

although i'll probably never listen to them again for fun, nirvana has some great songs with fantastic hooks and that's more than most of the mainstream bands of that era can say
like fucking pearl jam for instance |

I always thought that Cobain would go on playing industrial/nin-kinda stuff in his 30's. |

I'd never liked Nirvana until a couple years ago. All I really knew were the singles and I think I purposefully avoided them because of their ubiquity and general annoying-ness 100% created by the media and their "legend" and whatever else.
but then I listen to stuff like the Live at Reading thing that just came out and they pretty much slay. just incredibly noisy loud intense obtuse angular punk abrasive shit, incredible musicianship...it's incredible a band that sounded like that broke through so big...associating them with creating "grunge" is such a weird happenstance thing. anyway ignore me. this is ravenguy discovering for himself things that should be in a "90s rock for dummies" book. |

bob dylan and, except a few tunes on rain dogs, tom waits.
the sex pistols just seem silly to me, as well. elliott smith never seemed very special to me. |

yeah i think the reason I'm dismissive of nirvana lately is due to the legend of nirvana and not the actual music, though I wasn't really that into it even in its time. It was almost always SP SP SP SP SP. Also it might have to do with my awakening to the Pixies in the last few years.
come as you are is a great song, so is In Bloom. And they give a shout out to Leonard Cohen on In Utero, which is an album i never listened to that much and subsequently lost. |

I always thought Alice in Chains was the worst of the first wave of grunge bands.

i was more referring to the "grunge incarnate" thing. grunge was a made up mainstream media term that never meant anything, how can you even try to progress from there
also they did progress, just compare bleach and nevermind i don't even like nirvana much your comment just seemed really stupid |

nevermind was just really slick, bleach was not. if you want to call that progression, then knock yourself out.
nirvana became synonymous with "grunge" music, and i would just as quickly call mogwai "post-rock incarnate." mogwai is also a band that is never going to progress from what they are known for. |

The Pixies
Pavement My Bloody Valentine The Velvet Underground all ridiculously overrated imo I like a few songs here and there with each of these bands but their overall output is meh to me |

true, but what exactly do grunge bands have in common that it's possible to "progress" from? that they're mostly from washington state? i guess nirvana should have moved or something.
