I've seen SP in every iteration, starting before they released Gish, through the point where he fired the band in 2012. And there's not a show after the original break-up 23 years ago that is in the top of anything

There was a short tour prior to the release of Oceania, back in 2010 or 2011 where bill played a lot of really old material that we hadn't heard live in 15+ years. That was OK. But Mike Byrne drums was not good and bill's voice was shot by then. Also, there's been no real energy on stage with any iteration of this band since the "reunion"

I consider the 2018-now iteration of the band better than all iterations of the band since 2000. Including Zwan.

So it's the best of the worst?

There was nearly a decade there when the Machina era was the low point. So arguing that anything is the best since Y2K is kind of sad.

Agree with MOAO

I'm old enough to sort of remember the first big wave of disappointment (Adore era) and the whole 'Nicole is better than Ginger, Schroeder now shreds!' kinda bs is just pathetic guys

some of you just shut up already.

SP live late 2008 (before Jimmy left) was as good as any of the pre 2000 era. That band was really starting to come into it's own.

Modern lineup? I think it's great. sure, it's not as good as 1996 SP but It's not terrible. Seeing snail, xyu and silverfuck in one show was not something I got as a fan in any prior eras.. and silverfuck slapped.

Zwan was great live but they also had a good handful of boring songs in their sets. like lyrics, el sol, declarations.. songs i only needed to see once. but once they got to mary star it was pretty god tier.

Also the click track thing. they use it on a few songs. that's it.

late 00s was definitely one of the more interesting periods of SP, live-wise, if only for the fact that nothing was truly off-limits. even including the original run it seemed that the ZG & 20th anniversary periods were times when you could practically expect any deep cut, b-side or demo to make its way to a set, and Jimbo was still on board, sounding great not bogged down with plastic Shiny-era stage production etc etc

It really depends on what you want from a show.
I remember watching the video from Rock am Ring 2007 super excited and being very disappointed because the band didn't even feel like they wanted to be there.
Even the best setlist ever can't make up for a bored performance for me.

I saw the pumpkins in 2010 and it was the same thing, band felt like they were clocking in, audience went from super excited for it to not giving a shit by the end of the concert. (tho that concert had an incredibly shitty setlist on top of it imo)

Contrast them with Metallica (you can hate the band, that's fine nobody cares) who I saw live both in 2010 and last year. Not only they sounded even better in the more recent show they were absolutely contagious with their old men enthusiasm.

I do have to say. The Soot and Stars they were playing during that time is a high, high point for me. It’s beautiful live.

Exactly this. I love it when the band jams. Show I saw this year, lots of jams. lots of improv.

same with 2008 show. a good showcase of creativity and some loud jams. also jimmy was in top fucking form on that tour.

You scribble a bunch of sharpie on your forehead and take her octave because you are the dominant powerful man at the front of the stage who everyone loves and came to see specifically there are literally no other members of the smashing pumpkins past or present

Idk why it’s so funnny to me that they were pushing harmageddon as the closer on last tour but now that it’s actually on Spotify it’s out of the set

Also solara>once in a lifetime>eye>Ava adore seems like a deliberate sequence to piss people here off.. like you really feel so connected to SOLARA that you have to play it at probably hundreds of shows by now since 2018???? Let James sing a fucking song instead FUCK !!!!!!

Billy singing it at the same register he sang it on the recording and at live 96 shows.

Darcy did backup on this and it’s seen as a slight towards Darcy? I don’t get it. Maybe if he did daydream but that happened eons ago
