Default Liftoff choruses

love these.

what's the secret? is it the chord progression alone?

all the songs that i can think of are:

Ava Adore
Perfect
Everlasting Gaze
SIYL
HMM

Everlasting Gaze probably the perfect example of this

Absolutely transcendent move from the verse to chorus

I don't even care about the song but just to hear that change is a wowee moment

1. Bolly and Jummy both dressed in black vs. Iha and Molly in white (=symbol of death).

2. frequently cutting between "teh illusion" and "behind the curtain" with digital glitching occurring mostly over the transitions = Bolly going talking to God

3. smashing guitars = rock is dead. throwback to 1991. leaving scorched earth

4. strangers walking around the set seemingly unaware of the music video taking place = "I'm casting my pearls before swine anyway"

I dare say the "lift off" is even stronger in live versions

literally their best video and one of their best songs.... the fact that your average netpho can't get over the acapella bridge proves that theres still a lot of growing up to do in TSP fanbase

the secret of the liftoff chorus is in the production... extra elements/layers are added and often in the case of ram's examples, ambiance enters which adds and airiness to the chorus as opposed to the drier verses

Gonna go with a potentially unpopular opinion here, but Melissa's underboob in this video is hotter than D'arcy's nips during the Adore era (plus Kenny Aronoff kind of ruined the aesthetic of that era).

I can't tell if you're joking cuz that transition always sounded so hamfisted to me whenever they played it live. They just pound on through the riff as hard as possible and without the added keyboard parts or whatever it is it just sounds like dry assrape

Sometimes, a song will go up a step in key, but I don't think most pop/rock songs do this between chorus and verse. They more often do it for that final, extra amped-up chorus ("Man in the Mirror").

Sometimes, it's just a matter of the chorus being louder and having a faster tempo than the verse. I think that is likely the case in most of these songs. I don't think Corgan uses key modulation a heck of a lot.

Though I haven't sat down and looked at the notes to verify.

Billy feels he's lost the attention of The Youth because "everyone hated Adore" or w/e, but look how they're coming back and sitting down with their wallet chains and big pants and shit because they're playing The Music of Today now

You have the worst opinions about everything. The acapella bridge is embarrassing. I literally cringed the first time I heard it and have skipped that part ever since. The chorus of that song is good though.

Am I just getting old? Am I going to start voting for candidates who want to tax the unhoused or burn peaceful protesters at the stake or something? Is the TEG video being someone's favorite maybe just something I need to make peace with if I don't want my soul to wither away? Should I fondly recall the videos for Today, Rocket, Tonight Tonight before settling into a meditation pose and thinking "It's good and cool for someone to prefer the one where Billy is prophetically making wild semaphore-signal gestures at a fisheye lens while standing on a floor that looks suspiciously like a green-screen setup they ran out of money for. I am unclenching my jaw and embracing my intuitive wisdom"?

ram - the songs you mention are mostly ones that have the verse in a minor key with heavy emphasis on the 1 chord, and then the chorus starts with the relative major key's 1 chord (the 3 chord in the minor key).

Ava Adore - F minor, chorus goes to the relative major (G#) and starts with the G# chord.
Everlasting Gaze - C# minor (or whatever the fuck down tuning it's in), to E major.
SIYL - Bb minor, to D major.

HMM dos a similar thing but with a key change too - C# minor, to A major

not sure what you mean with perfect though to be honest, the verses and chorus sound the same to me. always thought it was a pretty crappy same sounding song all the way through.
