Life back in the USA has been rough for the 14 months since I returned.

1st apartment burned down, moved to Pittsburgh, have student loan debt piling up, earned a masters degree in literacy and reading education that is basically worthless (here), work a thankless minimum wage job in childcare, and live in a slummy apartment with rats...


I'm fleeing to Mexico City to work at the American School Foundation, teaching grade 1 and developing literacy programs.

My husband (as of 2 months ago) gets to be recognized as my spouse with full visa benefits because Mexico is all about gay marriage.

And I can bring my pug.

I am going to get so fat.

The landlord installed faulty gas hookups (a washer was split, allowing a leak), said the fire marshall.

The landlord countered that no one could prove I did not "move and damage" the hookups, and claimed because I had signed a walk-through of the apartment (where we checked the burners did work at that time) I had signed away any responsibility from them. 2 lawyers agreed. We settled with letting me out of my lease shortly thereafter, heavily discounted rent on a new place for the remaining time, and a small sum of money to replace what I lost.

Yeah. I am in a "classroom" of 3 year olds right now. 16 of them.

I cant wait to be in a room without diapers and where the kids know how to eat and wipe their own asses.

To be fair, live in any major city and there's gonna be rats everywhere around. Its all whether or not they can get through the walls of your apartment.
