Default Michael Byrne is one of the best drummers SP ever had

Sick of all the negativity about Mike and his drumming style — sure it was different than what you’re use to—that was the point! Billy wanted to take the band in a new exciting direction and Mike was perfect for that! Quasar is right up there with cherub rock as an all time classic opener. I don’t care what anyone says Mike brought a youthful energy that tbh the band really needed

This is correct. If Billy had let Mike bring the true bearcubbin energy and youthful spunk to sp just imagine what kind of records we might have gotten

He was never a bad drummer, just a bad fit.
Tho the stuff about his treatment by Corgan was pretty horrible.

You wouldn’t know good snare tone if it hit you in the ass. Saw them live with Byrne and his snare sounded fine. His drumming was excellent too.

oh it hit me in the ass alright, and it was the dullest spanking i ever got. no bass or articulation, barely cuts through the recordings.

and lol at paying to see that abomination live.

Mike did indeed had a lot of spunk and youthful zest and if he could have injected that bearcubbin energy into SP it would have been a real shot in the arm matter of fact only thing that kept oceania era from being = mcis is a bitchen keyboardist like melvion

That snare tone has been a thing in rock for a while now. Opeth's Sorceress album sounds exactly the same, that thuddy, boxy sound.

In fact listening to them side by side, Quasar isn't quite as thuddy as Sorceress:

He could do a passable JC imitation but it would've been interesting if WPC wrote some stuff that used his natural style or skillset.

Yeah I mean that’s quite a statement but you hear the drums on ATUM and while great they just don’t have that youthful spunk like you hear on oceania and especially the live sound from that era was just so lively and sort of vigor/viril quality that was very exciting

I agree you are on the right track about oceania. Neg rep me all you want, but I really think Michael Byrne was one of the best drummers SP ever had. I miss the youthful spunk and bearcubbin zest he brought to the band. I wish WPC hadn’t been so hard on him!

Benji Madden is one of the best pop-punk members of a pop-punk band Good Charlotte ever had (on his respective instrument)
