Default Cover tweaks

Before I go further.
What needs to change on this?
I will be adding another synth for more movement and tweaking the drums a bit more.
Any other suggestions?

What are you going for? You trying to recreate the original or do something a bit different. Bring out the synths a bit more, I quite liked them, is you want to make it more interesting that a straight-up copy... That's my take anyway.

I want to get semi close but it’s tuned half a step up.
C# instead of C. I want the drums to be a bit bigger than the original so I used Slate’s trigger on Popot Fabio’s drums that he sent me.
I layered the Diezel and a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 then added Burier on the Diezel and Sound Toys Decapitator on the Marshall for that cyber grit thing.
I’m hoping the extra synth layer might make them pop a bit more with movement.

Sounding really good, spguitar0. The drums sound bigger but maybe a bit too forward and separated in the mix.

If I were mixing it I'd end up spending days tweaking the compression before just turning down the channel volume and throwing it in the endless "fuckups" directory.

I think another synth would sound good and I do like the additional brightness from moving to C#.

I definitely agree about the drums. I had just laid trigger in and started tweaking before this mixdown. I’m debating bringing the room mics up slightly for “glue” too. It feels like a never ending process when I start mixing things but trigger livened it up so much.

Yeah, something kind of off - reverb maybe, makes it a bit hollow somehow?

That drummer is good. Thanks for name dropping. I'll have to watch a couple more of his vids

Good work. Sounds cool anyway.

I'm on the fourth listen of the "Rough mix w/ vocals" and I am really digging the overall recording. I will say I am not hearing much going on in the low end. The bass is nearly inaudible and I am listening on a set of adam a77x's with a sub. THe drumming and guitar work are phenomenal to me. Singing is good, could use better layering or some snarl to really give it some bite. During the a cappella breakdown part, the vocals are layered nearly identically so it gives it a sort of phasing sound that I didn't like.

Would you ever entertain the idea of a remix project with the stems once you're finished with this track?

Absolutely! I have them on Adam monitors too and I’m really hoping a 2nd bass layer will help lift the low end some. I may have gone a bit overboard on the sound toys vocal effects in this rough draft. It’s so hard not to.
Any other suggestions? I appreciate your comments very much!

Experimenting with plugins and effects is the best way to find new sounds and techniques. I've listened to this track like 25 times now lol. Curious, is that pick squeal or trill at 1:14/15?

I believe it’s a pick slide on one of the underlying Terz layers. There’s a LOT of guitar on this. I used 4 different ones.

Why copying a song almost one to one? It sounds reall good, but doing your own completely different version would be cooler

The final version will have a few more elements but I like the challenge of a full on cover for the most part.

At this point you should just record the entire Machina record and B-sides. It'll be done before the reissue.

I recorded everything besides the drums of course in like 4-5 hours so that's tempting!

Thanks for the advice on TEG guys. I took it all into consideration as I was recording the final vocal takes this weekend. It’s being sent off for Mastering by a Grammy nominated engineer. Will release it soon under the project name Pure as a Lie.

Here’s what’s coming next:

Sounds dope, but was hoping for a full on recording of MACHINA lol. Whats the goal of this project?

It started as learning my new recording software and playing some of my favorite songs while doing that. Now I really don’t know honestly with how good they’re turning out.
I’d like to put out a tribute ep.

Good work dude. You should really do a whole machina album and then release it.
Surely bill would tell the fbi. So take care

I always wanted to do a full album cover of MCIS.
That would be a major undertaking though. Positive note! I just sent TEG to Mike Kalajian for mastering. He did my bands last EP and has some Grammy nominations so it’s gonna sound beefy.

You're great brotha. Cool to see the solo versions up close.

Have you done Aeroplane flies high? Would love to see it.

That nasal snarl is gonna be fun with bigger guitars than the original.
