I consider myself reasonably well versed in Billy's guitarisms but the only midi footswitch I even had any recollection of him mentioning was that Rocktron unit

there have been some past successes —

uncovering the so-called "secret ingredient" of bill's futureembrace guitar sound (eventide orville),

learning just what the hell this thing on top of bill's sd-era rack gear was (juice goose model 12 voltage regulator)

but these were no substitute for the ultimate mystery, in my book: more info on bill's lake butler mitigator — how he came across it, the specific manner in which he used it, patch names, etc.

i even asked him about it directly on instagram a couple of years ago. he claimed not to know what i was referring to and asked for a photo, so i sent him the pic spguitar posted earlier in the thread. he replied with something cryptic and immensely unhelpful.

flew too close to the sun, i suppose

The Lake Butler Mitigator was just a MIDI footswitch. It was one of the most advanced controllers of its time and you could make setlists with your patches. There’s no real mystery there. It was just programmed to switch presets on the JMP-1 and various fx units he had.

Also while I’m here, Corgan’s tone with the Marshall JMP-1 destroys his sound now with the Salvation preamps. I have not liked his live guitar tones in years.

That's interesting. What's your source on this, if you can recall? I thought I remembered he said somewhere that he used the H3000 Ultra harmonizer.
There was even a joke about it on here - iirc basically a "lolz sillybilly decided to use only 1 guitar processor on the record and elected the grandest mothership of multieffects".

The real "secret ingredient" to billy's TFE sound though, is the technique of using a dense delay with a lot of repeats and send that into the distortion pedal or preamp. THAT is what produces that bed of irregular, washy noise that to me really characterizes that record.

As a side note, I always thought it was cool that you can hear that sound make an appearance in the intro to By Starlight. Cool little precursor.

my source was Brian Liesegang, who was involved in the recording of the album, and who played, uh, laptop (?) on the tour

there was a thread on a gear forum where he provided a bunch of details about the recording process. pretty sure it's been posted here before. anyway, he made references to this "secret ingredient," but never divulged on the forum. messaged him privately, and he told me.

I remember at first thinking it was an h8000, but it wasn't out at the time of the recording. I thought maybe billy could have gotten an advance unit.?

from gearslutz posts with thechs that worked on the album, they weren't shy to say it was the Orville.
the Orville was the top of the line eventide model at the time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eventide,_Inc
Quote:
H3000 (1986)[20] - First intelligent/diatonic pitch shifting. Used the 16-bit TMS320 DSP chip.
DSP4000 (1994) - User-programmable algorithms with a large toolkit of DSP functions
DSP4000B, DSP4000B+[21] - Series of processors with algorithms written for broadcast and film production, by sound designer Jay Rose.
DSP4500 (1998)[22] - Similar to DSP4000 with the addition of sampling
DSP7000 (2001)[23] - Pitch shifter / effects processor with four times more processing power than the DSP4000 series
DSP7500 (2001) - Similar to DSP7000 with the addition of sampling
Orville (2001)[24] - Pitch shifter / effects processor with twice the processing power of the DSP7000 / DSP7500 processors[25][26] and up to 8 channels
Eclipse (2002)[27][28][29] - First Eventide effects processor to come in single rackspace unit
Clockworks Legacy (2003)[30] - Software plug-in versions of classic Eventide effects and DSP
BD500 (2004)[31] - 40-second version of Eventide's fourth-generation broadcast profanity delay
Anthology TDM Bundle (2005)[32]
H8000FW (2005)[33] - Successor to Orville with increased processing power

if only billy had waited a few more months, we would have had the superior TFE featuring H8000!

Assuming this is the thread you're referring to, wherein brian liesegang divulges info about the recording process and "four voicing" methodology billy used, among other things, the Orville is never mentioned, though he does drop some hints.

Quote:
I am not sure if he wants me to divulge his signal path right now, but to give clue, it was pretty much made out of one device, and on occassion we threw one of his huge huge collection of vintage pedals.
Quote:
The "one" piece of gear, I guess it's no big deal, as the actual guitar signal path was quite simple on the record.... Billy is used to having his amazing array of amps with controls over everything to go to different pedals/signal paths etc... decided he was going to stay with one dsp unit, and one amp (well kinda, a pair of them just for "stereo").

in the Eventide realm....

yeah, that doesn't contain the "mystery" device, but getting closer.. wtf, I saw billy a few weeks ago, I'm just gonna call him and ask him if I can let the kitten out of the bag, as I doubt he cares at this point

My guy Brian Liesegang gets notably shaky when asked questions about BC's equipment

I guess he has that effect on people
