Angry Laptop recommendation thread

So, my laptop is broken again. In January, Toshiba (even though it was no longer under warranty) paid to have it fixed (it needed a new system board). And now, just a couple of months later, I am having the same problem again. And this time, Toshiba refuses to pay to fix it. Basically, for the amount it will cost to fix it (especially since it seems that this is going to be a recurring problem), I might as well just buy a new one (which sucks since this laptop is only two years old).

So, for those who know about such things, what laptop would you recommend? I am willing to spend about $2,000.

I have an HP. They're pretty cheap and work ok as long as you maintain them properly.

My dell laptop is was made in 2000... although zach replaced a bunch of shit on it to get it in perfecto condition. I don't know though, I like it just fine.

But yeah, I've never heard of anyone having a laptop who never had problems, they all do.

I'd recommend mine but I've only had it for about 3 weeks and it's a Toshiba. It's pretty sweet though!!

That's pretty far in advance to be running out of first choices, lame.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 (I think the D810 is the latest). I've used my laptop for 4+ hours per day almost every day for 2 years...with not a single problem.

I love my dell inspiron 6000, Ive had it for roughly 7 months, no real problems yet. But its the only laptop ive ever had, so who knows. I just wanted to post this link: http://www.cheapstingybargains.com/c.../dellpage.html
If you choose to go with Dell you can find some nice deals on there. I saved like 7 or 800 bucks if I remember correctly.

I can't say enough how great these guys' laptops are.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/r05/ri05.asp

Don't pay attention to the goofy covers... they're supposed to be laptops for gaming. But for the quality of laptop and the price, it's worth it for just about anything.

I've had mine for 3 years now, and haven't had a single problem. It's the best computer I've ever owned.

Make a short list of the things that are most important to you -- and that will narrow down your selection a ton. Things like the type of battery life you're going to need/expect, size of the display, the general size and weight of the computer, processing power, 3d rendering. Once you've narrowed it down -- go check them out. I mean, if you're going to spend that kind of money on something -- you should definitely try before buying.

Also, max out the warranty. $2k for a laptop guaranteed to last a year -- or $2300-ish for a laptop that's guaranteed for 3+ years? Easy call.

Actually to get a similarly spec'd VAIO FE you're going to spend as much if you would for an entry level MacBook. The MacBook will have a better graphics card and a higher resolution screen, and it can run the best consumer level operating system and windows...

I bought a MacBook 1.83 Duo Core a couple of months ago and have been completely happy with the purchase, it actually runs much faster than the demo VAIO FE I tried out, probably because i have a stripped down version of windows without sony bloat ware but still, faster.

I'm heading to CompUSA this morning to take a look at some. Basically, I will be using it primarily for work. A long battery life is nice. I travel a lot and take it everywhere, so something that can take a little bit of beating would be good. The lighter the better. I would prefer 100GB to 80GB. I have a strong preference for laptops with a larger screen. And, of course, wireless capability is essential.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the different store warranties? In other words, is Best Buy, CompUSA, or Circuit City better for what they offer?

i have a samsung (i wanna say it's an x60, i'm not on it right now though so i don't remember), it's freakin' awesome. i don't know lots about computers and whatever, but it's been a very good laptop for me, and i've had like 4 (which all were bad, BAD!) not sure if they're under 2k yet though?
it's very light, very thin and has a huge screen.

I got my MacBook 1.83 Dual core with a single 512 DDR2-5300 chip, 80GB HD, 128MB Radeon x1600 graphics card, average battery use 4 hours (really good), its incredibly fast, weighs 5.6 lbs, its 1" thick... its a really hard machine to compete with, oh and it has DVI out not stupid VGA out.

$1799 before tax.
