I have too many obligations in Silver Spring. My situation is slightly different now, but at the time I was in a relationship with someone living in Reston, and I had a job in Silver Spring, and my stepdad who has ALS is also in Silver Spring, and he and my mom need a lot of help. I had moved to Falls Church/Tyson's (across from the Capital One behemoth) with my ex, so moving to Baltimore was not really in the cards. I don't think I'm really a city person also

I read something recently, can't remember where, about how it's perfectly good and maybe even beneficial to be mediocre at your hobby, to do something not because you're striving to master your craft but just because you have fun doing it. You don't need to impress people or turn what you do into a side hustle, you can and maybe should be doing something purely for relaxation and pleasure. I don't know how to get in that headspace but it seems like it'd really help me and tons of other people out

I agree with that. I think art and creation have a societal folk value that is just lost in consumerism. Regular people playing mediocre music just to entertain themselves and each other is almost looked down on sometimes, like why would anyone want to hear a hobbyist play music? well maybe because sharing our talents and gifts in a humble context is a natural and healthy part of building and maintaining communal love, appreciation, and interpersonal relationships?

there was a poster on netpho years back who wanted to learn to play shoegaze style guitar, but abandoned it (or maybe didn't even start?) once they realized that this involved learning all kinds of others things on guitar first that take time and might not be as impressive or esoteric. The idea of having to play open chords on an acoustic, and what others would think of that, basically seemed to kill this person's creative drive.

It sucks. It's a fear-based worldview that is obsessed with the reckoning of the consumer-capitalist machine, and it alienates humans from parts of ourselves that we need for our own mental and societal health.
