Default The moment I figured out why Mike had to leave the band

He was too much for, Billy. It's all drumming.

Exactly.

I also remember seeing a clip from a really small gathering with Dave Navarro. I can't find it online, but they're in what looks like a restaurant. It's a really tight space. The last song, Mike goes on a huge solo/outro, and Billy and Dave look at each other like WTF. In a good way, but you could tell they were not used to it.

Billy Corgan abused this poor kid and it remains one of the most heinous things he’s done. Forcing him to get cortisone shots in his hands just to play, kicking him out of the band and then subsequently shitting all over him, when the initial hiring was nothing but a publicity stunt anyway, it’s disgusting

The kid was a sick drummer and he can do stuff that 98% of drummers can’t do. I still maintain that the show I saw on the Oceania tour was better than three with Jimmy I saw after he rejoined.

Where's the source about Mike having to get cortisone shots to continue playing?

How many times do you think Mike jerked off in his bunk thinking about seeing Nicole’s breasts as she slept underneath

Ok, here's what I know:

Mike's arms got all fucked up during the Oceania tour in 2012-13. He had to get cortisone shots and stuff to stop the pain and to be able to perform. It was crazy. They were playing for more than six hours every day. His wrists sounded like a cement truck.

NOBODY showed up on the overseas tour for Oceania which made Bill extra sour. I heard the word "rough" to describe how things were going from everyone in the band several times.

Yeah big willies mediocre songs really held Byrnes back as a drummer and a musician. This good hearted innocent chinned kid, the most wonderful drummer in the world, tried to save the record, killed his wrists into cement mixers that’s how hard he tried, but big willie wouldn’t let him save it.

Mike's drumming suited the times, but Billy's songwriting did not.

It seems like Billy gave up at one point and just said "Play like Peter Criss".

Sometime ago someone made a "blind listening" thing.. Clips of, I think, Cherub Rock played by every drummer the bands ever had. Most people had Jimmy down as best, Mikey down as 2nd best.

As a veteran of the disastrous Cola Wars of the 1980s who watched a lot of good men and women die for no good reason, let me just caution you: this way lies untold carnage.

I disliked the idea of Byrne, that Jimmy could be replaced by a kid, that Billy was going to groom and bully this poor boy, etc., etc., but I can't say I actually noticed anything to hate about his drumming. Lots of people who play drums would point out problems in his technique or times he'd hit the snare at the wrong moment or something and I'd be like, "Yeah, fuck this guy" because I'm easily swayed, but in my own listening it was just like "This is fine."

And of course now that he posts here, I've gotten to know him and like him as a human being. We salute you, thedeadofnight.

As a drummer I noticed a lot of flaws in his technique for sure, but I noticed a lot of passion, too. His age played into a lot of the issues I had with his drumming. Nerves, being anxious and overwhelmed contributed to some of the negative sides of his performances. Ultimately, he wasn't a good fit for the Pumpkins as they have a very structured sense of chaos that is organic to BC/JC. It's hard to emulate that naturally.

I'm an OG fan, but I never got to see them back in their prime. I was far too young and they just didn't tour much around here. Out of Mike, Jimmy and Brad Wilk I am actually shocked to say Mike was the most energetic live? I went to roughly 12 shows during the mike era, 6 for Jimmy and once with Brad as their drummer. I think Brad is a good drummer, but Rage groves are nothing like SP. It was hard to sit through that show it was so bad, but so was Billy, etc. Jimmy is a phenomenal player, undoubtedly, but The End Times tour and the Shiny and Oh So Bright tours were very, very bad. Billy and Jimmy's interaction during the 2018 show made me think they genuinely dislike each other. I guess my perspective is skewed because I have listened to every OG live show/bootleg to death. Mike's sloppily sped up and teetering on the edge of derailment style was entertaining live. For what it's worth its seemed to have gotten way better in 2019. Also, what was the name of the drummer before Brad Wilk? The one that spoiled the set/rehearsal list and was fired.

I've seen SP with each of Billy's drummers. Mike was the worst. But Billy had a some amazing drummers work for him so it's not that bad to be the worst Drummer in SP.

I would put the secondary percussionists from the Adore tour ahead of Mike if I had to rank SP drummers. Billy abused that poor kid. He has lots of talent but is also seems to have no touch and back in the Oceania days would just bash the fuck out of his kit during live shows. His timing was often off too. His style just doesn't suit either the old songs or the later ones.

Somewhere I have a pic I took of Mike and Matt Walker together back in Chicago in 2011......

If any of the core 4 are missing, it's post-zenith. That said, the show from France with Matt Walker in 1997 is absolutely phenomenal.

Matt is a great honorary pumpkin.
I'd rank him alongside Melissa as the two best non original members.
