there is a lot to monte that makes him infamous in these parts. including stealing bootlegs (and apologizing in one breath while saying "but really you should give it to me" in the next), going on crazy Mormon dates, stalking Corgan, recording tons of shows on video while clad in a suit and tie, paying board members to travel to him from thousands of miles away to record "music videos" that he never posted, and on and on

also infinitely quotable for both saying moronic things and being the king of malapropisms and bad grammar

Wow, seven pages of lies, obfuscations, and bullshit hypotheses. Great work, everyone. Billy’s aggression toward Netphoria was in fact born from one infamous incident, on one infamous night that would change everything for the band.

The year was 1996. I was at the July 10 Pumpkins show in DC, and I was hopped up on goofballs. About an hour into the show, during X.Y.U., I told my friends, similarly out of their minds, that I’d “had enough” and stormed the stage. Seizing D’arcy’s mic, I announced that I was “the people’s champion of netphoria.org” and that I was there to challenge Billy to a wrestling match, with the goal of “crushing [his] spirit.” Billy had never heard of wrestling at that point, but his honor had been sullied, and he threw down his guitar and dropped into a gorilla-like stance. We began to grapple and I easily finished it in about 30 seconds by pile-driving him through a card table, the sudden appearance of which onstage remains a mystery to this day. Jimmy, in an unprecedented move, got out from behind the drum kit and used James’s mic to declare he was “disgusted with this wack jabroni,” possibly the only time those two words had been uttered in succession in all of human history, and that he was going to have to “party extra hard tonight to get the stink of this embarrassment off me.” Melvoin slammed his hands on his keys in a descending glissando, possibly signaling his agreement.

I crowd-surfed off the stage atop a jubilant audience, all the way back to the exit, where my friends were waiting with a velvet cape they’d somehow procured, throwing it over my shoulders and escorting me from the building. I’m told that for the remaining half hour of the set, they played Spiteface seven times in a row, with Billy sobbing and blubbering incoherently through each performance.

Two years later, Andrew Pakula would receive a bootleg of the show from Dave Asselin in a trade and decide to register netphoria.org in tribute to the stranger whose act of heroism would one day directly lead to Billy owning a wrestling franchise, and had encouraged two band members to overdose on horse, one fatally. In those days, Netphoria was just a page with some “under construction” GIFs and a RealAudio clip of my historic time on stage. Pakula had discovered Billy’s email address, [email protected], and would send him a link to the page every day. This went on for years. Billy, hardly a natural with technology, never figured out how to block Pakula’s address.

I’ve never identified myself as the man known for decades only as “The People’s Champion,” but it’s time to step out of the shadows. I don’t expect your praise or an instant upgrade to mod status, but I do expect your gratitude. You are all my children.

The downfall of this band was just extremely sad but entertaining to see. And this was the only place you'd find really honest opinions about the decline of one of our favorite bands.

I miss waiting for the Machina Mystery to be resolved, while laughing at the ridiculous Glass cartoons and ARG type shit.
