Analog tapes deteriorate over time, with the oxide on the tape literally flaking off (which is where the audio information is stored).

"Baking" them is a process which is sorta what it sounds like, in order to stabilize the tapes so that one can get just one more playback of the tape to create a backup.

Baking the tapes is better than frying them.

Healthier.

But in RBQ’s case, I think he actually ended up frying them

Thank you kindly. I kind of had it in my head this whole time it involved literal baking but I was sorta like, "That can't be right." This is cool.

Sounds like Basinki's The Disintegration Loops. Maybe everything that's happened to those tapes has been part of a plan. Maybe Bill is really going for that 10/10 from the pitchdorks this time. Maybe.

I was in the process of revising my Machina reconstruction, so I re-read this entire thread from page 1 to 166.

Holy fuck what a shit show. Fuck this.

Question

(Tone: sincere) What did you learn from that massive undertaking, other than you should never have done that? Or like what impressions did you come away with (besides what you've already stated)? Was anything actually helpful for your revision?

First off, it reminded me that Corgan has already finished this entire thing. Now he/we/whomever is waiting on the label to release it, which is literally out of anyones' hands. I've always wanted to wait until this version came out to get a better understanding of how the songs are supposed to fit together. But I started to get impatient, as some folks reached out to me on social media, trying to get copies of my old reconstruction. But now, I guess I'll wait.

Secondly, I completely forgot all of the little instavids Corgan posted while remixing this thing. Made me appreciate this era more (I've always loved it), but it also gave me pause, to, again, see what this dude has put together for us. But also, confirmed what I already knew in my heart-- Machina is a vast mess of an unfinished album that probably can never truly be finished or even "reconstructed" (to my "standards", which is a whole 'nother thing, I suppose).

Thirdly, I still love that he took two swipes at me, fucking hilarious.

As for my revised reconstruction itself, it didn't change anything, other than second-guessing the versions of the songs I was going to use (which led me to think to wait for this box set, if there'll be different and better versions). Last week I came up with a new track sequence, sort of starting from scratch, ignoring everything I did previously (which in theory, would discard my preconceived notions of the meaning of songs I've had for like 20 years). The result was a revised track order that had some similarities and some differences to my last one, but also fixed a few of the issues I had with it.

But it's almost like a lost cause, I guess. I'll just wait until the box; maybe then do a reconstruction that is a different angle, like a "What if the album was finished with D'Arcy", making it like an Arising version? who fucking knows.

sequencing M1 and MII into a story is almost like trying to sequence MCIS into a story. Billy's story telling is whack. he fancies himself a tarantino/mNightShamalan

no one would be surprised if some day it's revealed that ATUM is actually a prequel.

Have you done any other albums in the past 8 years or so? I can’t find Albums That Never Were online anymore.

I think I dl’d TMV - Frances The Mute (and Machina obv.)

it is a fool's errand to care about the story of a record. a record contains good riffs and groovy beats, not plots or characters

A record has whatever its creator decides it needs to have, and that also extends to a narrative. Don't be stupid.

It's rough. Since I was trying to replicate the Arising version with that drum pattern going all the way through Part 2, I had to sample that stray drum beat and time stretch it to match the tempo of Part 2.

I did! There's still this dumb high-end distortion from the source record though, so it's almost impossible to make it brighter without bringing that out, and it's especially audible near the end of the song.

All the usual tricks like parallel compression, parametric EQ but also Izotope Ozone 10. It depends on the song.

Maybe I should just upload an entire M2 remaster and call it ad day.

These sound really good. Would love to hear the whole album via your remaster.

Do you do studio work professionally?

At least The Wall doesn't need 33 hour long podcasts to explain its concept. The song themselves tell the story... unlike a certain "concept" album. I'm starting to think Billy doesn't know how to make a concept album.

Hmm, you ever work with Izotope RX10? I wonder if it can help.
