James: if I don’t look left on stage and avoid eye contact with Billy this will all be over soon. Just one song at a time James. You can do this.

I thought the very first seconds of the video where Billy kinda fiercely walks right up to the camera, almost intimidatingly, and in this weird tattered clown costume - that was pretty cool

But of course then the song started

basically this

there's literally no riff

hey guys remember this

10 0 0 0 12 0 0 0 12 0 0 5 0 0 10 0 0 12 00

give me a fucking break

he's bragging about how much he loves tony iommi

that's not a fucking riff that's your go-to "jam" riff for the last 30,000 years

the guitar tone sounds like mud and also it doesn't even sound like you need microphones

That album was terrible ngl. Everything from 1970-1976 is god tier though. Dio era was fine but didn't sound like Sabbath (they need Ozzy to sound right IMO). We don't talk about what happened post Dio and pre-Ozzy returning.

it's a really "bad" album but

"been a huge fan of grey/white new balance sneaker with fringe black leather jacket metal lately"

it's an interesting album if you think of it as a tony iommi solo album

idk i spend a lot of time listening to "shitty" music. like after you've exhausting the "really good" black sab catalog you've got to start digging into the inner workins of the lesser albums right?

or are you just a casual fan?

That album was not terrible. And the Dio era was some of their best stuff ever.

I have listened to Sabbath pretty heavily since I was 15 and I’m 30. They’re my favorite band along with SP. I like RJD, I listen to his work in both Dio and Rainbow, it just doesn’t sound like the band I love without Ozzy. Conversely, I don’t think Ozzy sounds right without Iommi either. Randy Rhoads was so immensely talented he was able to make great records with Ozzy before he died, but there’s never been a guitarist who has written music for perfectly for Ozzy than Iommi.

I find it hard to call it some of their best without Ozzy or Bill Ward (apart from H+H), two guys who were hugely instrumental in creating the sound of the classic lineup. Bill Ward is easily one of the best metal drummers ever btw. I don’t think anything from that era holds up to the first 6 albums they did. Although I don’t really think anything any other metal band does has held up those albums tbqh

Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules absolutely fuck. Some of their heaviest and darkest work. Iommi at the top of this game.

But alas, Iha is back in the band, and the music still sucks. Clearly, it must be Wretzky!"

Like, sometimes people have it, and sometimes people lose it. I'm sure working with certain other people positively influences the output… so long as they give enough of a fuck to even make suggestions, and Corgan actually considers their opinions. If not, they'll just collect the cheque and avoid the headache of getting Corgan pissed at them, or Corgan'll just kick them out of the band, like he did Byrne (who probably at one point said, "I dunno, why don't we do something weirder and more interesting?")

There are probably a host of reasons Corgan doesn't make music like he used to, not a single overwhelming cause.
I think you're right here. There is no secret missing ingredient to explain Billy's inability to write a decent song any more. He just lost it and that's it.

I distinctly remember when Zeitgeist came out and everyone here was shitting on it mercilessly. A common narrative at the time was that Billy needed Iha's input and without him the Pumpkins magic was lost. Well, Zeitgeist had many problems but it absolutely shits all over Shiny and Cyr. So much for Iha's return. If D'Arcy was back in the fold I doubt it would change anything, because the sad fact is that Billy has slowly lost his creative spark over the past few decades.
