IDK what the deal is with mTurk, sorry they don't like you :( Most people crash on mTurk anyway (try reading about it, all you will see is people making $2 an hour), if it makes you feel any better, but you would have a huge head start with me if they do ever approve you. But I promise you will be very confused if you do get approved on how to make it work. It is really about getting several different good clients that post work often and as many as possible of those that post infrequently. I am still trying to figure out how to get personal clients because right now they are all through third parties (except Appen I guess, which is by far the lowest paying but I guess the most stable, although it in its own way is a third party too). I really don't have a lot of hope that this is sustainable in the long term but it seems likely the next few years will be okay. It's unlikely I will lose all the good work at the same time. At least that is what my therapist says and it makes sense, and in a lot of ways having an "employer" who owes you labor protections or whatever is bullshit anyway. But now that I could survive for a couple months even if I somehow lost all my work without it totally destroying my life I feel somewhat better |
Applied to both, thanks so much for all the advice
It's kinda difficult to...evaluate, because I think part of me wants to transition into just doing this stuff, but part of me is used to just being a boy who delivers pizza and, recently, does this on the side made 1 cent from appen tho! yeeeee! |
man lionbridge is so easy. and i made so much in october ($1,700) that they suspended my account for a couple of weeks lol.
|
you're going over your max?
|
Hella.
I think you're not supposed to go over 80 hours a month (20 a week). I got 145 for October, lolololol. |
they would fire me for sure lol, but i guess they aren't worried about labor laws with freelance. if you go over 26 hours twice you are toast with mine i believe. i think they picked a number they know for all states they don't have to worry about all that stuff, but idk
|
oh wow i didn't know it was a legal thing. i've gone over 100 hours at least 5 or 6 times in the year that i've worked lol.

$500 month is so cheap though! |
Rent is getting high most everywhere in the States.

Something like this might be ok. What you save on airfares you could spend on transport to/from San Francisco. But yeah....the everyday experience might be nowhere near as enriching as Columbia or Turkey. |
that is middle of no where central valley California. That would be awful place to live

You could live in Miami for 3k a month with roommates |
I live in a small city about 45 mins from Miami and my 700sq ft apartment within a mile of the beach is $1080 (inclu water/trash only) and is basically the cheapest you can get without going into a high crime area anywhere around here. But there are also plenty of 3 bedrooms under 2k, so roommates make it much cheaper

$1000 per month would maybe get you a bedroom in a shared apartment or house in DC. That wouldn't have been the case last year. But it looks like rent has come down a bit in some of the bougie "co living" buildings, which are 4 bdrm apartments where you rent a room and share the kitchen, living rm, bath with 3-6 other people

We paid close to $4k US/month for an older 4bdrm apartment in Singapore and currently pay about $2500 USD for a 2-3bdrm house here in New Zealand, so paying $500 or less for a month actually does seem like incredibly good value - I guess Took’s other tip of making best use of exchange rate really helps. I’ve never travelled anywhere where the exchange rate was that favourable to me. Maybe Cambodia...but I always end up paying the foreigner premium anyway 😐

Damn, housing is fucking expensive in the rest of the country. I pay $1200 for my 3bd/2bth in Dallas/Fort Worth. New build, live in a very “trendy” area.

i cried on the morning of january 1st
of course you know intellectually that of course, the calendar changing changes nothing. it's just another day and nothing gets fixed. but it's so depressing to actually live that. to work until fucking 11:30 on NYE, watch the ball drop, sleep, watch all the college football i can, go to work again, labor and toil, producing profits for the bourgeoisie, sleep again. nothing stops. it's jan 1st, there's work to do. people who are 'better' than you get to stay home and relax. i drove out in the rain for 5 hours. nothing stops. i guess i used to be able to fool myself. nothing's gonna change though. what the fuck will joe biden do? what the fuck am i supposed to do? i'm not drinking, cool. i want to see the pumpkins again. i want to sit in the summer air at a baseball game. how can i have goals or dreams when the reality is so ever-present and so crushing fuck |
