Cool As Ice Cream 12-26-2011 06:27 PM

i don't remember!

but i found this: http://www.starla.org/chrono/1997a.html
Quote:

September 1997

The New York Post reported on the 29th about a "cyber psycho" named Sam Manzie, 15, who assaulted and murdered an 11 year-old boy. Sam was a big pumpkinhead, and the story linked his obsession with the Pumpkins a possible reason or influence for the murder. Go figure.

great poster 12-26-2011 06:54 PM

i don't, actually. interesting enough though just last month I was searching SP t-shirts and came across this site from 1996 that's supposedly this kid's website. it has pictures of him and his girlfriend and it talks about how they were both big SP fans.

Glopaiswe 12-26-2011 06:59 PM

Yeah, it's this site: http://anon27.tripod.com/XSpaceboy1/sam.html

Kinda creepy actually

Cool As Ice Cream 12-26-2011 07:15 PM

how is it possible that that site still exists? weird.

reprise85 12-26-2011 07:20 PM

honestly it looks fairly normal to me

if i could find my personal web page from 1997 it wouldn't look extremely different, i mean change around some hobbies but it doesn't seem that sinister really looked at by itself

at least what i've read so far... it is interesting though, very.

reprise85 12-26-2011 07:22 PM

also it seems like he probably never met his "girlfriend" IRL

i kinda feel bad for him, the state fucked up big time

Look at the lyric quotes, in context of the video.

Extremis 12-26-2011 11:49 PM

im shocked that billy didnt get blamed for any of this..the media is notorious for that

great poster 12-26-2011 11:52 PM

their music isn't too destructive. with any luck the media probably heard of his interest in SP and probably just listened to mayonaise and luna and thought "hey this isn't bad at all"

yeah, they are mostly about death and pain i guess

i'm almost positive i spoke to this guy on AOL back in the day. they had private rooms that you had to know the name of and the smashing pumpkins room was fairly popular. i remember people in there freaking out a little when the news broke.

keep in mind this is a chat room that had like an online seance or some shit on the anniversary of Melvoin's death

we were obsessed little fuckers

Order 66 12-27-2011 12:21 AM

i don't see how he did anything wrong

Elvis The Fat Years 12-27-2011 12:21 AM

yeah, really. just seems misunderstood.

stumpycat 12-27-2011 12:33 AM

The www.smashing-pumpkins.net chat room was very popular back in the day. I remember when people used to have "cybersex" on there, too.

Also: for a 15 year old this guy seemed unusually obsessed with preserving and following institutionalized traditions for young men.

reprise85 12-27-2011 12:34 AM

the pumpkins sure did capture the hearts of 11-16 year olds everywhere

Yeah, don't the nascent rock audiences just seem to get younger and younger? Back in my mother's generation it seems like people really only started getting into rock music at age 14 or 15. Now you'll see 9 year olds sporting Green Day t-shirts because they actually proclaim themselves a fan.

Those were interesting days for sure. I remember we would always be at war with the Bush private room. I only remember a few people from in there. Redrum, Sycophant, etc.

I think that I would attribute it to something different, as this seems to be a steady decline over the generations which started long before that particular piece of technology. I think it has something to do with the biological hastening of pubescence and how that has shaped culture and, more importantly, how increasingly targeted demographic marketing in an increasingly commercialized society has responded to that catalyst. How pre-teens are cued specifically towards older reference groups is termed as being an "aspirational" focus.

reprise85 12-27-2011 01:17 AM

lol, the bush private room. i totally remember that and almost just posted about it

i don't really remember anyone. um. i remember someone that was like an incorrect spelling of vieuphoria. i was 12 in 1997

i had awesome generic screen names like cagedrat33

Uh...he strangled his 11 year old neighbor. Does that not qualify as wrong in your book?

reprise85 12-27-2011 01:32 AM

True. He has already been judged, by a judge, who gave his punk ass life in prison.
