just finished watching it. 4.5 stars. half star deducted for lack of perceived punk activity. he's actually a really good kid.

What the program was trying to do, I think, is reduce the decision to be punk to the relatively manageable issue (in 45 minutes) of taking on an “unacceptable” personal style. But the problem is, bringing the subject down to that plane renders everything everybody does unintelligible, nothing fits together. In the end, the show makes it clear that Terry kind of does have to make a choice between the pink mohawk and his desire to continue with the orchestra—but why would he want that??? Punk has no context here. In a way, the intolerant old-timers in the show are right: deciding to be punk does mean crossing a line over which there may well be no easy return, you can’t just wander back and forth as you wish, unless you’re supremely charming or talented or both—and even then, that ability may come only after years of societal rejection.

Amiable as Terry is, you can’t be a punk unless you’re a punk on the inside—and we never see any evidence of that in this friendly young fellow.

4.5? Are you taking the piss or is it really worth watching?

slunken 10-18-2013 01:40 AM

4.5 on the scale of AS Specials and maybe Lifetime movies, too

not trying to compare this to citizen kane ffs

slunken 10-18-2013 01:43 AM

but hey its the same system netflix uses so if you are supposed to go ahead and rate both pootie-tang and shawshank redemption with 5 stars each

slunken 10-18-2013 01:45 AM

You've rated - Ingmar Bergman - Winter Light - 5 stars

You recently watched - Trailer Park Boys - 5 Stars

pavementtune 10-18-2013 01:58 AM

I should have tried to be clearer - I wasn't sure if this is a banana/cw parody thread or if you actually recommend to watch it.

slunken 10-18-2013 02:11 AM

if you like lifetime movies this one is great

MusicMan4 10-18-2013 04:42 AM

I buy into the punk rock mindset

Starla 10-18-2013 05:54 AM

yo soy el mejor 10-18-2013 09:07 AM

punk is a state of mind, not a style.

yo soy el mejor 10-18-2013 09:08 AM

duovamp 10-18-2013 09:52 AM

he's a hipster so it's an ironic star scale that is actually the inverse of how good it actually is, so in normal non hipster terms it's .5 stars

you were looking for something a little more...punk rock?

MyOneAndOnly 10-18-2013 01:50 PM

i lived that.

I remember in 87 or 88 my dad sitting me down and saying he wasn't worried about my crazy hair or clothes or weird music.. as long as I "wasn't one of those fags."

Trotskilicious 10-18-2013 02:01 PM

and now it's just a fashion choice so you can be an orchestra dork with a mohawk and nobody would even think you are a punk rocker

Catherine Wheel 10-18-2013 02:31 PM

I remember I went through a phase of listening to and idolizing nothing but 80s New Romantic stuff. The New Romantic movement is basically the exact opposite of punk rock.

no, this is the diametric opposite of punk rock:

Trotskilicious 10-18-2013 04:53 PM

new romantics are an offshoot of punk

when they talk about "new wave"

the new wave of punk

that's what it means

slunken 10-18-2013 04:54 PM

def Leppard started out as a NWOBHM band

Trotskilicious 10-18-2013 04:54 PM

what does that mean

MusicMan4 10-18-2013 05:16 PM

new wave of big handsome men

Trotskilicious 10-18-2013 05:23 PM

like rob halford and lemmy

yo soy el mejor 10-18-2013 05:43 PM

so is this punk or not?

sppunk 10-18-2013 06:14 PM

This thread inspired me to put on Op Ivy.

MusicMan4 10-18-2013 06:35 PM
