what is surf?
|
if you're looking for whammy tech this is your guy
he gets it |
I honestly believe a smooth dip/twang with some smooth vibrato is one of the sexiest moves on the guitar
|
most guitarists i know remove the twang bar even if it has the option. they say stupid things like "it makes me go out of tune!"
like i know dudes with sick 60s SGs WITH THE BAR and they just refuse to use it. like i get it if you don't want to use it but don't make dumb excuses. personally i think its one of the sickest effects and it's built in. |
just obviously you can't be doing eddie van halen dive bombs on the fucking thing you r-slur
|
elph stop lurking this is my favorite style of guitar its so romantic
|
not this situation i mean the style of guitar

jokes on you slunken i mentioned ventures POSTS ago
they are apparently still a thing, in some form to which someone in instagram comments tastefully posted "i thought everyone in this band was dead" |
ventures are literally surf rock 101 (baby level) so i don't get how the joke is on me
|
i'm not saying they're not good but they had like one thousand records

For those who do it - You know who you are |
There's literally nothing worse in music than to see a guitar player play a crappy gassed out blues lick and then hesitating ever so slightly before decidedly yanking the bar in pavarotti style

and this thread is essentially surf rock 101 for a board about The Smashing Pumpkins so it'd be pretty stupid to not at least mention them, eh? it ain't like it's the 60s & their the hottest thing outside the British Invasion, I honestly only found out about them via the "bargain bin" of my local record store - tho obv found out pretty quickly they were kind of a big deal
|
anyway, fuck it
I'm a Surfer Now |

guitar players ITT - have you removed the twang bar or do you leave it on?
always wanted a gibson SG with the bar attached to the bridge or even just a japanse knockoff |
when i had a Gretsch with the big bar attached to the bridge you could literally feel the entire string section buckling. and you couldn't really pull up at all.
i did some music for some indie documentary about egypt a long time ago (just dumped a bunch of songs) and one time the russian director was at my attic apartment and i played her my first "twang" song just for fun and she said it was "the saddest thing she ever heard" emotionally, she meant. so chill. twang is under-rated. idk if I even have that file anymore. I suffered an entire external hard drive crash around that time and lost years of work. |
I tried out a Gretsch, but decided to go back to the trusty strat because it's so Ace for surf

but also the rhythm guitar...the lil tik tok played on heavily muted strings is pretty essential to the sound |
short answer: Dick Dale is surf
|
Takeshi Tarauchi is the man for tremolo bar insanity

honest question |
I'm more confused about the lowercase letters. Why not ACE.
|
I am more of an "EIIIII" man myself
|
i usually go for "eh man"
|
elphy, important question, did you buy new clothes? what does your typical surfer outfit look like?
|
also,
