what is surf?

slunken 08-17-2022 11:58 PM

if you're looking for whammy tech this is your guy

he gets it

slunken 08-18-2022 12:02 AM

I honestly believe a smooth dip/twang with some smooth vibrato is one of the sexiest moves on the guitar

slunken 08-18-2022 12:06 AM

most guitarists i know remove the twang bar even if it has the option. they say stupid things like "it makes me go out of tune!"

like i know dudes with sick 60s SGs WITH THE BAR and they just refuse to use it.

like i get it if you don't want to use it but don't make dumb excuses. personally i think its one of the sickest effects and it's built in.

slunken 08-18-2022 12:07 AM

just obviously you can't be doing eddie van halen dive bombs on the fucking thing you r-slur

slunken 08-18-2022 12:15 AM

elph stop lurking this is my favorite style of guitar its so romantic

slunken 08-18-2022 12:16 AM

not this situation i mean the style of guitar

jokes on you slunken i mentioned ventures POSTS ago

they are apparently still a thing, in some form

to which someone in instagram comments tastefully posted "i thought everyone in this band was dead"

slunken 08-18-2022 07:03 PM

ventures are literally surf rock 101 (baby level) so i don't get how the joke is on me

slunken 08-18-2022 07:03 PM

i'm not saying they're not good but they had like one thousand records

I totally agree, but also it's the most revealing indicator of bad taste and campyness when it's done even slightly wrong or too much.

For those who do it -
You know who you are

There's literally nothing worse in music than to see a guitar player play a crappy gassed out blues lick and then hesitating ever so slightly before decidedly yanking the bar in pavarotti style

you negged me for my [2nd] mention of them then shared a video of theirs, "r-word"

Joey Goldberg 08-19-2022 11:58 AM

and this thread is essentially surf rock 101 for a board about The Smashing Pumpkins so it'd be pretty stupid to not at least mention them, eh? it ain't like it's the 60s & their the hottest thing outside the British Invasion, I honestly only found out about them via the "bargain bin" of my local record store - tho obv found out pretty quickly they were kind of a big deal

Joey Goldberg 08-19-2022 12:03 PM

anyway, fuck it

I'm a Surfer Now

I'M COMPLICATED OK

slunken 08-19-2022 06:02 PM

guitar players ITT - have you removed the twang bar or do you leave it on?

always wanted a gibson SG with the bar attached to the bridge or even just a japanse knockoff

slunken 08-19-2022 06:08 PM

when i had a Gretsch with the big bar attached to the bridge you could literally feel the entire string section buckling. and you couldn't really pull up at all.

i did some music for some indie documentary about egypt a long time ago (just dumped a bunch of songs) and one time the russian director was at my attic apartment and i played her my first "twang" song just for fun and she said it was "the saddest thing she ever heard"

emotionally, she meant. so chill. twang is under-rated. idk if I even have that file anymore. I suffered an entire external hard drive crash around that time and lost years of work.

Elphenor 08-19-2022 07:49 PM

I tried out a Gretsch, but decided to go back to the trusty strat because it's so Ace for surf

twangy guitar with the reverb cranked so you get maximum drippp

but also the rhythm guitar...the lil tik tok played on heavily muted strings is pretty essential to the sound

Elphenor 08-19-2022 07:53 PM

short answer: Dick Dale is surf

Elphenor 08-20-2022 05:16 PM

Takeshi Tarauchi is the man for tremolo bar insanity

I'm more confused about the lowercase letters. Why not ACE.

teh b0lly!!1 08-22-2022 04:34 AM

I am more of an "EIIIII" man myself

Cool As Ice Cream 08-22-2022 07:19 AM

Cool As Ice Cream 08-22-2022 07:19 AM

Cool As Ice Cream 08-22-2022 07:23 AM
