Spilling shit on laptops

Not literal shit in this case, but a rather thick fruit drink. I spent several hours today cleaning all of the keys individually and the spaces underneath them.

Then I removed the keyboard and found that one or two drops of this juice had found their way to the circuit board

It continued functioning when i first spilled the shit and I quickly turned it off. It tried to reboot a few times so I took the battery out thinking there would be minimal damage without a current

Anyway it seems the thickness of the liquid kept it from penetrating very deeply into the machine but I did clean many chunks of puree from under the keys.

Anyone have experience with this? I don't wanna turn it on yet

I think you have to take it apart.

killtrocity 02-25-2013 09:56 PM

I pretty much did... I cleaned off the spots with reagent grade methanol. You mean to check for other spots on the board?

i spilled some bourbon on my trackpad last year. stopped working for a few weeks. didn't do anything except buy a mouse. but it started working good as new.

never spilled on the keyboard though.

Put it in rice.

i made a thread i think where i gave my fairly new macbook pro a cup of coffee for breakfast

let it sit for at least a couple days. the cost to replace the parts it (may have) fucked up are almost as much as a new computer.

tl;dr - big bill

well if the keyboard is fucked a new one isnt that expensive. i dont know if waiting any longer is going to do any good with the innards...

pavementtune 02-26-2013 02:21 AM

It should. I dumped a cam in a pool, took it apart as much as possible, let it sit for 72 hours and used a hair dryer. Worked.

If it's still working in a week, then it will be okay.

I've saved several cellphones for people by pulling the battery out and leaving the phone in a food dehydrator overnight on the lowest heat setting. Works like a charm. One phone was in a washing machine for like ten minutes and the dehydrator saved it.

That's all I can contribute to this thread.

The water will evaporate, I'm mainly concerned if the sugar residue is gonna cause problems. Guess there's only one way to find out

thanks all for the advice

It might cause hardnaked.com redirects.

do people come to you when they have put their phones in the washing machine? is that your job?

My brother spilled a beer all over my macbook when i'd had it about three days. Wheat beer too. We let it dried it off and i've now gotten three years good use out of it with no side effects.

Just one of my many duties as a crestfallen.com staff member.

i can imagine.

Dead Frequency 02-26-2013 06:21 AM

Alright take it easy Lennon

mxzombie 02-26-2013 08:24 AM

sugar shouldn't hurt because it's not electrically conductive. it won't short any circuits. if you had spilled a salty drink you'd be in a different situation. i fell in the ocean with my cell phone in my pocket a few years ago and no matter how much i tried that thing was toast.

killtrocity 02-26-2013 07:41 PM

^ thanks, gonna try it now. It's been stuffed in a drawer with silica gel since last night

edit: running beautifully. Smells a bit like a toddler infested minivan, though

noyen 02-27-2013 12:06 AM

donate it to charity then report it stolen.

noyen 02-27-2013 01:52 AM
