He said recently that they begged him to do it but he felt the "shit" lineup wasn't worthy of his time or the name Woodstock. Some bands that he likes/respects played it and they "must've had their reasons" but time proves he was right and the whole thing was "a joke".

it's almost like it was a festival lineup of what was popular at the time regardless of genre.

He said they asked him to do the star spangled banner as he was "the natural choice to take that torch" but he thought that was extremely disrespectful as he was a much more capable guitarist than Jimi Hendrix.
