Another Pro-shot Smashing Pumpkins show in 2018...

....performed by my tribute band 'The Mashing Potatoes'. #clickbait

I just got done editing every single 1hr and 50 minutes of this show that I played in July this year.

I'm the drummer in this. One thing to note is that instrumentally it's all pretty much there, vocally it's mostly there. There are some songs that the singer struggled with more than others, especially trying to sing Stand Inside Your Love after singing/screaming Fuck You. Try and appreciate the effort that went into this.

Set 1
I Am One
Today
Rhinoceros
Siva
Bodies
Jellybelly
Here Is No Why
Thru The Eyes Of Ruby [with live 96 and 97 outros merged]
Bullet With Butterfly Wings
Fuck You (An Ode To No One) [as per final Metro show]
Stand Inside Your Love
Geek USA
X.Y.U.

Set 2
The Everlasting Gaze
Ava Adore
Tristessa
Muzzle
The End Is The Beginning Is The End [live '97 version]
Zero
Tonight Tonight
1979
Disarm [Vieuphoria Version]
Cherub Rock
Silverfuck [impromptu 'LIAR' jam at the end as per SD Deluxe DVD, was not planned]

Anyway, hope you guys enjoy! We had 3 other songs that didn't make the cut in rehearsal, Glass' Theme, Cash Car Star and Drown... we're doing 1 more show in January so I'm hoping to have these in the next show, hopefully filmed also for posterity's sake.

Clickbait worthy choice of words

MonumentsRocks 11-26-2018 08:16 PM

You know, what we really need is a Smashing Pumpkins cover band that writes original material in the spirit of their earlier incarnation. Maybe you could find a Filipino fellow who can pull off Corganese vocals a bit more convincingly than black shirt.

A friend had something special stolen from them, and I said, "just buy another one and pretend it's the same one", while another friend said "a fake will always be a fake." I still agree with myself on this one though, authenticity is just a five syllable word.

you got something against filipinos?

Filipino is a proper noun.

FoolofaTook 11-26-2018 08:39 PM

what are you the grammer police or some-thing

russticles 11-27-2018 10:03 PM

Oh, you guys.

FoolofaTook 11-27-2018 10:09 PM

you got something to say, mr. russian testicles?

Raskolnikov 11-28-2018 01:53 AM

Quite a solid operation - did you guys have a decent turnout to it? Listened to 5 or 6 songs all the way thru, which is probably more than I could say about any cover band.

Impressive feat to undertake/actually do. SP drums aren't a joking matter, and while I'm no drummer or guitarist by any stretch of the imagination, you guys sound great.

It was a Thursday night show, had just under 100 people. I actually did Siamese Dream start to finish in previous years and sold out the same venue (450 people) on a Thursday - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...E-jcL-XqvJFj9Q

We're playing this set (plus Cash Car Star and Drown) one more time in January at a different venue on a Friday, ticket sales looking pretty healthy so hoping to pack that one out.

And yeah, SP drums are no joking matter. Ode and Jellybelly especially, those were the 2 I was most worried about nailing live.

Mashed Potatoes, huh?

I play drums in a band that covers songs by The Strokes.

Our name? Different Strokes.

We played their first album all the way through at our first show. Now we mix up the sets with songs from the first three albums.

There was a Strokes tribute band here called The Blokes for a brief period

Disco King 11-28-2018 07:48 PM

I don't understand the purpose of tribute bands.

Why?

russticles 11-28-2018 08:05 PM

Why not? It's fun to cover music by your favourite artist at a live venue. I play with original bands too but it's fun to do these once in a while and it's a good challenge.

Also there's a market for it, so as long as people still feel nostalgic for the 'good ol days' there'll be people out there to capitalise on it.

Same thing as a cover band, but with more specific appeal. They become even more appealing as the band they cover becomes increasingly less capable of putting on shows of comparable quality, due to the aging or death of the band members. Rain, for instance, pretty successful for a tribute act.

Did 26 songs on Friday, did Drown and Cash Car Star this time, still need to get the rest of the audio files from the venue for set 2 (which has CCS on it) but in the meantime here's XYU, drum cam only though.

Big Truck05 01-13-2019 09:20 PM

You guys sound great!

D. 01-13-2019 09:57 PM

I feel like you could have come up with a better tribute name than Mashing Potatoes.

Like, I know we all get the reference or whatever, but it's pretty bad.

D. 01-13-2019 09:57 PM

I mean, I'm not going to click on that video at all; just throwing in my opinion on the name.

johncg 01-13-2019 09:58 PM

Jazz musicians play “covers,” symphony orchestras do “covers.” WHY CAN’T ROCK BANDS?

Yeah, I agree with you. In hindsight it's a shitty band name (and sounds ridiculous to 'announce' it as well) but oh well. People at the gig seemed to get a kick out of it. I suggested to the rest of the band we change it for this gig but everyone else thought it was fine.

pinetree 01-14-2019 01:08 PM

I can't tell what's less interesting - an actual 2018 Smashing Pumpkins concert video (as the click bait title implies), or an SP cover band. clicking this thread was truly a lose-lose...

Very good.

Fantastic performance and drumming, Russell!

It's my singular wish of the band to re-record TtEoR in the studio with the extended outro. It takes the song from a 9.5 to a perfect 10. You guys captured it beautifully.

Skradgee 04-14-2021 03:46 AM

Pew, pew pew...

BANG BANG BANG!!!!!

Spaldz 04-14-2021 05:28 PM

Considering the Pumpkins are a cover band most of the time it's great to hear someone actually playing Pumpkins songs rather than a set of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and the Moody Blues.

Shallowed 04-14-2021 08:39 PM

Oh my god have they covered the Moody Blues as well
