What drum grip does Jimmy use?

I've seen him do a variation on the French grip in some videos but he still maintains so much power on the snare hits, how does he even do that? I play French too when I need a loose feel, but I do switch my left hand to American for choruses and shit.

Ram? Anyone?

he uses "the stranger"

Skradgee 05-04-2018 06:58 PM

just from watching videos it's looks like a combination of French and German

T&T 05-04-2018 08:10 PM

it's all french, but it's a french beast mode.

That's what I'm not getting. French is great for jazz, but the dude still hits like a train when he wants to, and I've never seen anyone else pull that off.

Separated by hands or is it a combination that he uses on both hands? Adding the ring finger maybe?

A really unique thing about Jimmy's grip is the pinkie finger...I don't know any other drummer who does that.

I do the pinky thing as well when I play, I was told it's bad technique as you should be utilising your pinky for additional stick control.

FoolofaTook 05-05-2018 11:31 AM

your father utilizes my stinky for additional dick control

slunken 05-05-2018 01:23 PM

the pinky is responsible for most of the muscle control in your hand

By the way...here's Jimmy's Spotify playlist:

any boris?

CherryRay 05-06-2018 05:41 PM

Well, I'm not too technical and learned most of what I play from Bonham, Joey Kramer, Nick Menza and Jimmy, but I certainly 'release the pinkies' when it comes to his more jazz style flams and Swiss triplets etc....could be terrible technique I've never had a teacher.

Corgan's Bluff 05-06-2018 05:55 PM

Jimmy's spotify playlist is more interesting than Billy's, if you like jazz...

He's like 5'7" and a 155lbs - but I see what you're saying as he's got that sort of tank build. Slightly athletic with a thick neck, forearms, and calves. He also has longish arms for a guy his size. Built for what he does. He was beefy as fuck during Machina when roids and the gym filled the gaping hole left by going sober.

I've always done that naturally when playing - I think it helps bounce doubles: there's more space for the stick to rebound
