Congrats!! Keep it going, don't give up - the hardest part is over now.

I've been taking Chantix for a week now, today I start my full dose of 1mg tablets, as opposed to the .5 mg tablets I've been taking every day. Yesterday I think it finally started "kicking in" because I felt like I didn't get much out of smoking a cigarette - what I think it's doing is slowly making it so when I smoke, nothing happens physically to make me feel good, so I still get cravings...but when you quit cold turkey it's like "I'll kill someone for a cigarette!" whereas my cravings right now, it's like go ahead, smoke a cigarette...so I smoke one and I get pissed off because it does nothing so I put it out halfway through. I think that's what's eventually going to happen and that's how I'll quit. My friend who did Chantix once before said "You'll know when it's time" and I see what he means now.

I guess it's a little better than cold turkey, it's different. I'm excited though. I'm so ready to just do this...

I tried the gum. It sucks...

See, without going into a whole essay here, basically the gum/patches keep you addicted to nicotine while you ween yourself off of the actual habit of smoking a cigarette. This new pill weens you off of the nicotine addiction while you're still smoking...it's a trick on your brain, basically. I have no problems with the habit, but I have lots of problems with the addiction.

I hated the gum because it just prolongs the inevitable...the problems come in when you start getting those heart-pounding cravings and you don't get those until your receptors stop processing nicotine...which until this pill came along, meant you had to stop putting it into your body. Does that make any sense?

I've also had a horrible continuous headache for the last two days which I've been keeping at bay with asprins and such, but that's a good sign that I'm starting to get weened off of it.

Rockin' Cherub 01-09-2008 02:46 PM

i can smoke whenever i like and stop whenever i like and lately i ust don't feel like it. the concept of addiction is too irrational for my clearly superior brain

monkeyfritters 01-09-2008 02:50 PM

yeah... i dont smoke right now but I can start whenever I want. trust me.

twice 01-09-2008 02:50 PM

Actually it's an enzyme in your liver that determines how much you need to smoke.

Perhaps, but it's nicotine's affect in your brain that makes you addicted.

Rockin' Cherub 01-09-2008 03:07 PM

i don't listen to enzymes.

Right, but I was referring to his not having to smoke every day like most smokers.

Perhaps he's just started or doesnt smoke often. I used to know someone who only smoked when the went out drinking. Gradually they started smoking more often. ie they took a bit longer to get fully addicted than someone who smoked every day from the start.

Lola 01-09-2008 03:16 PM

WTG! I hope you manage to do it!

Those people are assholes.

Irridescent Fairysex 01-09-2008 03:30 PM

I live in a constant state of fear because I always think that the cigarette I'm about to light will be the one that gives me cancer. Fortunately all the cigarettes I've smoked have been cancer-free.
