Are people giving 10/10 rating this album in isolation to itself, or it’s actually one of the best songs you’ve ever heard?

In all fairness, I've always been drawn to stuff like Daphne Descends, Waiting, Shame, and a lot of the weirdo songs. When I first heard Dorian, I just wished for a whole album of that sound. So this may all be my fault. But Im happy. This is up my alley. Finally: I will confess to some amount of hyperbole in my life. ;) |
entire album is dogshit

For context of enthusaroo's ratings:
ATUM II 1/10 ATUM I 0.5/10 Cyr 0/10 Shiny 0/10 Monuments 2/10 Oceania 3.5/10 Zeitgeist 3.5/10 Machina I and II 9/10 Adore 10/10 MCIS 10/10 Siamese Dream 10/10 Gish 9/10 so in fairness.. you can see the slight improvement in music from Billy since Shiny and Cyr.. but it's still pretty fucking hard to listen to |
Avalanche - Goes nowhere fast and is a couple minutes too long. Kid is the right kind of creepy-cute though. 2/10
Empahs - I experience great joy every time I type Empahs, but do not like the song. Would be better without Katie. So it gets 3/10 Neophyte - So confused why BC thought this was the "enduring" one..? No discernable progression, it's like if a blob were a song. I think it is my least favorite of the bunch. It ain't right, that's for sure. 1/10 Moss - Legitimately like the guitar. Nice and sludgy. Why the FUCK did he add those meows and undermine the whole thing?? 7/10 Night Waves- This one hurts more coming right after Moss, the juxtaposition is highly unwelcome. It's crap, I don't understand the vibe. Is he trying to sound like a kaleidoscope? 1/10 Space Age-Same basic comment as above, except the singing is worse and its slower. Could barely get through it. The only thing that sounded okay was the part around the middle, it reminded me of the xylophone-style instrumentals in the SP lullaby album. It only lasts a few seconds though, but it earns it an extra point for my nostalgia. 2/10 Every Morning - This has displaced Neophyte as the least favorite. 2 minutes of literally nothing, and then it turns into Pinwheels, which was my least favorite Oceania song. 1/10 To the Grays: The intro reminds me of a song by Metric (Satellite Mind) and I like that song (whole Fantasies album). And I like the "I could never" because I'm a sadgurl. 4/10 Beguiled: I still hate it. And the fact lots of you like it makes me resent it more. It's everything I dislike about SP3 in one go. Bad "ironic" lyrics, Billy-choir, weak guitar, no style in the video 1/10 The Culling - I will say that if I were to imagine what a Space Rock Opera were to sound like, the instrumental of this song would be it exactly. 4/10 for nailing the concept. And for being the only example where Katie's vocals make sense. Springtimes - Not what I expected! Not completely my style, but its nice. 5/10 |
So that totals a 2.8
I like it better than Act 1 though, which I think I gave a 3. So I guess my rating system is flawed. Maybe it's that the highs are higher and the lows are lower on Act 2. Or I just didn't give enough of a shit to be consistent with my grading metric. |
Only song I dislike on this is moss. It’s insanely corny.
I like the rest. Night waves and space age grew on me. I think neophyte is a vibe as is every morning. Springtimes sounds classic to me. However, there aren’t any songs I’ve felt the need to repeat over and over, like with good in goodbye and steps in time. And it bothers me how out of place empires and beguiled sound.. seeing as they’re the only riff rockers. But I still contend this is leagues above cyr. There’s a lot of future embrace feels on this act and I’m into that. It’s not bad. I don’t understand the vitriol.. they’ve done way worse before. Obviously they’ve done better but I’m not as disappointed as some of you here. |
Absolutely piss poor/10
Can't bear the dry unprocessed endless synth fuckery, it's painful to listen to |
01 Avalanche ---------- 6 5/10
02 Empires ------------- 7.5/10 03 Neophyte ----------- 6.5/10 04 Moss ----------------- 5.5/10 05 Night Waves ------ 7.5/10 06 Space Age --------- 9/10 07 Every Morning --- 5.5/10 08 To The Grays ----- 7/10 09 Beguiled ------------ 8.5/10 10 The Culling -------- 9/10 11 Springtimes ------- 9/10 average 7.4/10 I'd round it down to 7 tho |

You'd think by this point I'd have a general perception of just how many psychopaths we had running around these parts - threads like these show that is not quite the case!
|
Every Morning is good. Missed opportunity for some lovely Jimmy drumming on that one.
|
No way i'm listening to this again... so it gets an N/A from me.
|
I genuinely can't imagine someone enjoying this bullshit. There are no melodies, nothing creative, just word salad over bleeping Casios. The subreddit is spinning themselves in knots to defend this album and it's hilarious
|
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd much prefer to listen to Shiny Vol 1.
Silvery Slumtimes and With Blimpathy are loads better than anything on Atum, and I'd only rate them as 6/10 for SP songs. |
I genuinely don't feel like listening to any of it.
It might be better than I remembered the individual songs being, or it might not, but I just can't be bothered to find out. |
This is my review but change Michael Bay to Billy Corgan and Pain and Gain to Atum

There are sad machines-ian levels of cope and Atum defending going on on the fb SP groups.
|
BUT GUYZ THERES STILL 1 WHOLE ACT 2 GO, DONT JUDGE YET

Avalanche - 1:30 minute intro is totally unnecessary. Just start the fuckin song. We got shit to do. With that out of the way it’s one of the better songs so far.
Empire - weak Muse wannabe rocker. Trite and boring riff. Bad vocals. Neophyte - repetitive and boring. Dumb lyrics. I hate it. Moss - so repetitive and boring. Couldn’t sit thru the whole song. Excruciating. Night Waves - more unbearable clownshit music. Intolerable. Space Age - one of the better tracks on the album. If you rated this lower than a 6 you’re wrong. Every Morning - builds too slow and it’s just a weaker version of Gold Mask. To the Grays - more Cyr cutting room floor leftovers. Thoroughly unremarkable. Beguiled - enough said about this song already. The Culling - builds into nothing. Pointless. Springtimes - snoozefest, not even a good ballad. For me Act II is far worse than Act I. It sounds like unfinished castoffs. He has lost any ability to self edit and evaluate the quality of his own work. There are actually some songs I like on Act I. Only three songs from Act II made my Atum playlist. |
