"The great shofar is sounded... A still small voice is heard...
Even the angels are frightened... the Day of Judgment is here...
Who shall live? And who shall die?
Who shall find rest? And who shall be restless?
Who shall be raised up? And who shall be humbled?
Who shall be rich? And who shall be poor?
But - Atonement, Prayer and Good Deeds deflect the harsh decree!
As for Man, he comes from dust And to dust he shall return..."
Man is like... Grass that withers... A flower that fades... A shadow that passes..."

Our Father, our King,
we have sinned before You.
Our Father, our King,
we have no king except You.
Our Father, our King,
deal with us kindly for the sake of Your name.
Our Father, our King,
give us a new and good year.
Our Father, our King,
annul every severe decree against us.
Our Father, our King,
frustrate the counsel of our enemies.
Our Father, our King,
rid us of every oppressor and adversary.
Our Father, our King,
close the mouths of our oppressors and accusers.
Our Father, our King,
remove pestilence, sword, famine, caers ity, destruction, iniquity and persecution from the children of Your covenant.
Our Father, our King,
hold back the plague from Your heritage.
Our Father, our King,
forgive and pardon all our sins.
Our Father, our King,
blot out our transgressions and sins; remove them from Your sight.
Our Father, our King,
in Your abundant mercy, cancel all record of our sins.
Our Father, our King,
bring us back to You in perfect repentance.
Our Father, our King,
send perfect healing to the sick among Your people.
Our Father, our King,
tear up the evil sentence decreed against us.
Our Father, our King,
remember us favourably.
Our Father, our King,
inscribe us in the book of a happy life.
Our Father, our King,
inscribe us in the book of redemption and salvation.
Our Father, our King,
inscribe us in the book of sustenance and support.
Our Father, our King,
inscribe us in the book of merit.
Our Father, our King,
inscribe us in the book of pardon and forgiveness.
Our Father, our King,
make salvation flourish for us soon .
Our Father, our King,
renew the strength of Your people, Israel.
Our Father, our King,
renew the strength of Your anointed one.
Our Father, our King,
fill our hands with Your blessings.
Our Father, our King,
fill our storehouses with plenty.
Our Father, our King,
hear our voice, spare us, have compassion upon us.
Our Father, our King,
receive our prayer with mercy and favour.
Our Father, our King,
open the gates of heaven to our prayer.
Our Father, our King,
do not turn us away empty-handed from Your presence.
Our Father, our King,
remember that we are but dust.
Our Father, our King,
let this hour be an hour of mercy and a time of grace with You.
Our Father, our King,
have compassion on us and on our children and babies.
Our Father, our King,
do this for the sake of those who were killed for the sake of
Your holy name.
Our Father, our King,
do this for the sake of those who were slaughtered for proclaiming Your unity.
Our Father, our King,
do this for the sake of those who went through even fire and water so that Your name might be revered,
Our Father, our King,
avenge the spilled blood of Your servants.
Our Father, our King,
do this for Your own sake, if not for ours.
Our Father, our King,
do this for Your own sake and save us.
Our Father, our King,
do this out of Your abundant compassion.
Our Father, our King,
do this for the sake of Your great, mighty and revered name by which we are called.
Our Father, our King,
be gracious to us and answer us though we cannot merit it;
treat us with Your justice and loving-kindness and save us.

Just for the record, I do actually read this stuff a lot of the time.

Samsa 11-07-2002 03:55 AM

I believe in the sun even when it is not shining.
I believe in love even when feeling it not.
I believe in God even when he/she is silent.

Do not be afraid -- I will save you.
I have called you by name -- you are mine.
When you pass through deep waters,
I will be with you; your troubles will not overwhelm you.

Isaiah 43:1-2

Samsa 11-07-2002 03:56 AM

Hear my cry, O God;
listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint;
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the foe
I long to dwell in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

The Bible - Psalms 61.1-4

Wherever I go, only Thou!
Wherever I stand, only Thou
Just Thou, again Thou!
always Thou!
Thou, Thou, Thou!
When things are good, Thou!
When things are bad, Thou!
Thou, Thou, Thou!

gnight

On waking in the morning:
I give thanks to you, Ruler of life and everlasting, Who, in mercy, has returned my soul to me. Our trust in You is great.

On Eating (fruit):
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who creates the fruit of the tree.

On Eating (bread):
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who brings forth bread from the earth.

On Eating (vegetables):
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who brings forth fruit from the earth.

On Eating (cakes & cookies):
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who creates different varieties of sustenance.

On Eating (meat, cheese, and all other foods):
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe through Whose word all things were called into being.

On Drinking Wine:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, Who creates the fruit of the vine.

There are also a variety of thanksgivings to be said upon completion of the meal.

On Hearing Thunder:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Whose might and power fill the world.

On Seeing Lightning:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who does the work of creation.

On Seeing a Rainbow:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who remembers the Covenant, is faithful to the Covenant and keeps His word.

On Meeting a Torah Scholar:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who has given His wisdom to those who revere Him.

On Hearing Good News:
Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe Who is good and does good.

The Opening of Sabbath:
Blessed be He and blessed be His name. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of Sabbath.

At the End of the Day:
Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be on your heart. You shall teach them to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit at home and when you go out on the road, when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your arm and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes and you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

What's that one psalm that's something like, "my eyes grow dim and weary, something something something"? From the King James. It's one of David's psalms. Something just reminded me of that.

?:

"I am weary with my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God."

i always liked "be still, and know that i am god." i guess people misread it in a god's-hollering-at-me kinda way, but to me it reads gently. like the line from Ash Wednesday: "teach us to care and not to care / teach us to sit still." maybe i'm just smitten with the word still.
