Mets get Johan Santana; Twins get fucked in the ass
Well, as long as the Mets and Santana can agree on a contract extension which will happen, this is a done deal.
Twins give up Santana and, in return, get some really middling Mets prospects (Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey). Gomez is good, the rest are pretty average at best. Minnesota appears to have really gotten rooked on this one, as (if accurate) the offers both the Yankees and Boston had on the table had far better prospects. Still, enjoy the NL Johan! |
Amazing deal for the Mets. The new GM for the Twins doesn't look like he is going to hang on to his job for long with deals like this. Mets just got the best pitcher in baseball, without having to give up anyone on their majorl eague roster, and still held on to their #1 pitching prospect(Pelfry), and #1 position prospect(Fernando Martinez). I thought there was no way this deal would get done without Martinez included. Someone should probably get fired for this in the Twins front office.

I am just glad he isn't in the AL East.

I'm just glad he didn't end up with the yanks or red sox. Just so I don't have to hear one side or another try and say he sucks now because they didn't get him.

This thread is a disappointment.

What a fucking terrible trade for Twins. They are having an abysmal off-season. That douchebag GM got fleeced, both the Yankees and Red Sox offers were better than the Mets', but of course he waited too long trying to get them to out-bid each other. Unfortunately for him, Epstein and Cashman don't suck at their jobs and knew they didn't have to budge for Smith to crack. The Mets, Red Sox, and Yankees all win in this deal. Santana's out of the AL, the Sox and Yankees get to hold on to their prized prospects, and the Mets get the best pitcher in baseball. The Mets get a very good prospect, a solid prospect, and two okay guys. BLAH.

that doesn't mean ANY package is worth him though |

I wouldn't call Gomez a 'very good' prospect, but that's all semantics. If he stays healthy, I imagine Santana wins four Cy Young awards in his seven years as a Met. But, Santana had an off season in 2007 (for him) and wasn't the best pitcher then. I hope it was just an bump for him and not a tell-tale sign of a career arc. |
Here's a pretty decent analysis of the track records of pitchers signing 5+ year contracts:
http://clevelandtribeblog.blogspot.c...at-emptor.html It will be interesting to see how this affects the Sabathia negotiations. |
