Looks like a good development, smaller file sizes and no need for .md5's... has anyone had the opportunity to use this new format yet, and if so how did they find it?

That is so awesome. Set a standard, get people educated about it, and then change the format.

Quick, everyone convert all your SHNs to FLAC! Somebody set up a ban on SHNs on the hub! Who's gonna be the first to call someone a newbie for wanting to trade SHNs?

I'd like to participate, but I'm gonna go compress all my new FLACs with LZH, or maybe ARJ.

This actually isn't anything new at all. There are a lot of other compression schemes out there besides SHN including .APE which is pretty close to what FLAC is. FLAC is open source.

Anyways, the only real advantage this offers is that it allows 24bit encoding. In a few years, 24bit will be the new standard (hopefully with built in error correction!).

You read Star Wars books, so I'm thinking you're not exactly the type of fellow whose judgement can be trusted.

This is not to say that I am funny, but I'll take that kind of comment to heart when it's made by someone exhibiting a... (how to put this delicately?) ...greater level of sophistication.

Whatever you punks do, don't re-encode any existing SHNs to FLAC. Only use it on new waves. It is a pretty sweet format. :D

Hey Dave, how about one of your famous analogies? I enjoy them.

(Disclaimer: No, that was not ass kissage.)

You'll maybe want to ask your Reading Comprehension 101 teacher for some extra credit work. I admitted no defeat; I said that I would consider the comment only when it was made by someone with more sophistication. Since I am the arbiter of what I consider "sophistication", this leaves me in the position of never having to agree with someone that I'm not funny. Hah!

Just made some comparisons...

001_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 01 - The National Anthem.wav = 49,842kb
001_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 01 - The National Anthem.shn = 38,524kb
001_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 01 - The National Anthem.flac = 35,000kb

012_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 06 - Everything In Its Right Place.wav = 79,725kb
012_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 06 - Everything In Its Right Place.shn = 49,706kb
012_Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong E_P - 06 - Everything In Its Right Place.flac = 46,514kb

emb3dded md5's... nice. But I don't think this is worth turning an SHN community over for.

Well, those megs do add up. Consider that you'd save like 75 megs on a full disc over SHN, then it puts some formerly 2 disc SHN backups at one disc (late 2001 Tool shows come to mind). Plus, that 75 megs might not be significant to broadbanders, but to people on dial up, it's several hours difference.

Exactly.. those megs add up. While I'm not hopping on the FLAC bandwagon, I am confident it is time to move away from SHN, whether it be to FLAC, APE, or some other compression scheme. SHN has been great, but it simply won't stand the test of time without support for 24bit audio. We've known this for a long time, it's just been, wtf should we care for at least 5 years?

All the other compression schemes are just as easy as SHN, you'll just have to get used to the new acyronyms.

Is FLAC a good thing for the community? Yes.

Is it going to turn it upside down, though? No.

There's no reason to drop SHN. I just think that the Hub will expand into a multi-format Hub; instead of being fully SHN (at least for the audio), there will be SHNs, FLACs, APEs, whatever the hell else is lossless and decently compressed, with some method for checking for accuracy.

Certainly some will rush to embrace FLAC. And that's great. It's good to promote a new standard that's even better. But I seriously doubt that people already sharing SHNs on the Hub or that have their shows backed up to CDR as SHNs are just going to go back to those files and recompress them as FLACs. I know I'm not going to. But I probably will look into using FLAC from now on. That's all it comes down to.

And for everyone bitching about having to learn all the ins and outs of this, how hard was it to learn SHNs? I use the MKW program, which I never found at all incomprehensible, plus the SHNamp plugin (finally adequately updated recently). It wasn't exactly rocket science, though. So relax.

No one's forcing you to adopt FLAC and give up SHN. But you might as well give it an honest chance and then choose.

Sounds cool. And Zach is right about the 24bit thing...but they still need to come out with hard drive recorders...cus I don't know about you...but I'm not stealthing with a lap top anytime soon, I already got enough shit to sneak in. So hopefully a few more years...2002 has already been a great year for taping, and no one has even tested out the Lunatec V3 yet!
