I've known Monte for over 2 years. I've met him, and spent time with him. He's the nicest guy I know. He did a stupid thing, its not like any of you have never screwed up before. I totally agree. I don't know the guy or the details of what happened, and I'm not going to get involved in it except to say that copying a bootleg without someone's permission is just something you don't do, especially if you're friends with them. If one of my friends did that to me, I would probably end the friendship immediately, not because I would care so much about the fucking bootleg, but because that's a breach of trust and lack of respect I don't think I could take.

Actually I think he was just using the Mormon reference to not-so-subtly idendify Monte in the original post.

Then everything just flamed up because of Monte's "holier than you" attitude and refusal to recognise the severity of his action. If a friend tried to copy ANY cd of mine (rare or not) without my permission when I wasn't around I would be quite pissed off too. Then to smugly say I'm sorry and my religion allows me quick and complete forgiveness so chill out just adds fuel to the flame.

Of course I would wait and see if they were really sorry, and if they realized what they'd done. But chances are, they wouldn't. People who do stuff like that are usually not sorry they did it, they're sorry they got caught. If someone asked me if they could have a copy of something, and I said no, and if they then proceeded to steal it behind my back, that's really fucking shitty. I would never do anything like that.

As for the distribution of bootlegs, I'm all for being generous and sharing them, but if people don't want to, it's something you have to respect. Having bootlegs that aren't freely distributed is often the only way you can get your hands on other bootlegs that aren't freely distributed.

It was to my understanding that Mormons had a set of commandments they are to follow. One of them being, "Thou shalt not steal".

Jon attempted to steal, and I was questioning how that worked within his faith. I now see that he can simply "repent" to this "God" and that everything is cool and fine. He feels fine about what he has done and doesn't care about how I feel, because his "God" will forgive him. That's pretty neat.

Ok, the reason people don't want bootlegs freely distributed is because the quality goes down over time because of things like bad burnings, mp3-ing, etc. People want the quality of these recordings to be impeccable, and giving it to the whole community is gonna fuck that up eventually. Also, a lot of the time these rare bootlegs, once given to the traders as a whole, will end up on places like ebay, which is bad.

i agree with everything that affectation said. the whole concept of this thread seems pretty fucking mean spirited and pretty immature. it's pretty much just as bad as what monte tried to do. the mature thing to do would have been to have a discussion with monte about the situation and possibly make a decision based on that conversation regarding your friendship. just reading this thread made me feel like i was in high school again. i'm not saying that you shouldn't have been pissed about it *****, but how was handling it like this supposed to rectify the situation(unless you were only seeking petty revenge because you knew people would rip into him)? and i don't see where him being a mormon has any play in this. he's a human being. capable of fucking up just like the rest of us. to believe that your beliefs makes you immune from human nature is just silly. so to me this seems like not only a thread made out of anger over the situtation(which is a bit undersatndable) but also a thread made to ridicule monte for his particular religious beliefs(which is pretty shitty).

This is called idealism. It doesn't work. Let's say someone has a bootleg I want, but they won't share it. Am I going to break into their house and steal a copy? No, I'm going to be smart and negotiate myself a copy from them or someone else somehow. It's the only fair way to go about it. I, personally, am not a trader and share everything I can. But if someone copied me a bootleg as a favor and asked me not to share it, I wouldn't. You can't force the world to work the way you want it to, but you can be decent to the people in it.

First, I would like to point out that I never mentioned who it was who did this. I didn't even say it was a Netphorian. It was not until Jon came into the thread that he identified himself. If he had wanted to keep it a personal matter, he could have sent me a PM or e-mail saying such. He responded, thus making it the big hoopla that it has become.

I don't have anything against Mormons. I don't have anything against Satanists. I don't fucking care. Just don't preach to me. This was not an anti-Mormon thread. I used the term "Mormon" to identify the person without really identifying him. In a way, it was a shot at the hypocrisy of religion in general, but that was not my intent when I posted this.
