Yes, Billy has done a lot of stupid things since creating SP. His intentions were good at times, and at times he was just misunderstood. But what do you think the dumbest thing he's ever done? For me it's either got to be firing Jimmy almost immediately after the ole redrum incident or the whole Machina mystery thing. Actually, I think the whole Machina mystery thing was the worst idea. It might have been alright if he actually did something with it. God damn that thing pisses me off.

his biggest mistake was coming off as an egotistical brat to the media, who from then on refused to listen to his music and instead focused on his attitude. After that, he was stereotyped, and that turned off alot of people who then refused to take his music seriously.

uh, the whole machina thing was kinda silly too, IMO.

I don't think he's as egotistical as the media made/make him out to be. ie, the Q magazine article from a couple years ago. I really doubt that was accurate of how billy is all the time.

I agree with the Jimmy thing. They should have stopped the tour right there and let everyone float back to earth before talking it through and continuing later.

i made this topic a while ago, and i said the #1 stupidest thing was the machina mystery bullshit.

His biggest blunder was allowing himself to be confined with his writing (ie: Ok, must right songs in the context of "the Smashing Pumpkins") rather than just making music for the love of making music, regardless of context... When Gish came out he kept saying how they were going to play all styles of music and how this would ensure they wouldn't have to break up the band just to play different kinds of music. In the end, he allowed expectations to influence his direction, just when things could of really started to get weird. As much as I like the Machina album, its not as necessary as the other albums because their is a heavy element of Pumpkin context poured into it...which is good for a final album, but things didn’t need to come to that part... So what if D'arcy leaves? The Pumpkins were an ever changing entity, they survived without Jimmy long enough to make the most unique and arguably best album in they're collection (Adore). A short-handed Smashing Pumpkins is better than no Smashing Pumpkins in my opinion.

I'd have to go with firing Jimmy. They lost a dynamic that, while it may have influenced adore in some way towards the better, wasn't best for the band. I couldn't give a flying fuck for what any media says about the band, good or bad. I love the band, and when you love something you take the good with the bad. So what if Billy's an egocentric control freak? SD came straight out of that atmosphere and the band survived. The Machina Mystery was stupid, but if you don't like it don't pay attention. Machine itself is an awesome album.

and Fathoms, do you really think he fell to pressure and fell back toward the heavy guitars after Adore? Billy's not an idiot and he probably knew the album would be lackluster in sails, they had nothing for them except the fan base. The scene and time was against them. If he had wanted more commercial sucess he would have put more time into the M2 tracks that would've boosted sales.

Not firing Jimmy would have given them a much needed break, too. I haven't heard of anything but record, tour, record, tour, record, tour, record, tour...

The one thing I'm grateful for in the firing of Jimmy in '96 is, of course, without it we wouldn't have Adore. The fact that Jimmy's dynamic is missing in that album makes it a gem and I wouldn't want that album any other way.

As for the media thing, it's a two way road. The media will hype up a stereotype and artists will play off that stereotype. Look what it's done for Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson. Who takes their music seriously beside their fans anymore?

Billy's worst blunder I would say is MACHINA. Don't get me wrong, MACHINA is wonderful and Im defiteley a MACHINA fan boy. But what irks me is when Billy said he only put 80% effort into the album, and I can only imagine how much better it would be if he put the time and dedication in MACHINA as he did with previous albums.

Also he should not have let the media get away with hyping Adore up as a "techno" album.

I hate when people say that the biggest mistake was continuing after the Jimmy-overdose shit, as though it's their own opinion, and not just saying what Billy said was their biggest mistake. Heh, come on. If Billy never had said that it was a mistake to continue working after Jimmy, then no one would have thought bad about them finishing the tour, etc. If Billy said that Mellon Collie was their worst album, there'd be people saying "Hmmm... I'd have to say Mellon Collie was the worst album." Hehe.

Oh, and I think their biggest mistake was the organization of the the final shows. Fucking ridiculous. Billy doesn't tell the world shit about them breaking up until pretty much the very end of the U.S. Machina tour, and then mentions that they'll probably do a farewell tour after Europe and Asia. They come back, and what, the decide on only two shows... one of which is at the Metro, which is impossible to fit all the people that want to celebrate their closing. I think way too many people were unnecesarilly hurt because they had no way to get to Chicago and shit. I know I'd have felt jipped if I didn't have the money to get there. They've always said that they price their shows way less than most artists so that decent, real people can see them. But then, suddenly, a concert's costing a couple hundred dollars, instead of the normal $35 for a show that could have been part of a farewell tour.

I agree 1000% I feel jipped as I like many others would have loved to have gone to the final show but for christ sake it was too short of notice as it seemed at first notice, the farewell show would have been in Feb around my birthday but no it is short notice in decemeber & like many others, I got screwed out of going!

Crono, I wasn't talking about commercial expectations I was talking about fan expectations and personal expectations. In the break up announcement he mentioned that James needed to play music that was closer to his heart. After the final concert, he seemed liberated by this newfound artistic freedom that he should have still had with the Pumpkins. He believed in the project so much that he lost interest in shifting the dynamics of the group. After Adore, they continued on as the post-Mellon Collie Pumpkins. Machina sounds like a Smashing Pumpkins record. He shouldn't have felt he had to play the role as the megalomaniac band leader and make an album with Zeros(Teg) 1979s (TTT) Tonight Tonights (AOI) with an epic sandwhiched in the middle (G&TGC). In essence, he typecasted himself.

ppl express their sadness differently, for most here consolation seems to come from laying blame on others regardless of the fact of whether they were good or not...

personally the machina story was a brilliant move by SP, one of many... they should have stopped with the jimmy incident but that is the past, nothing can be done about it... great things came as a result, and it was not because of that the band broke up or because ppl started losing interest... dont illude yourselves to the greater truth that they were never in harmony with the commercial wave, which is why they were so great, and which is why it turned against them... but dont get mistake me, the break up of SP does not mean they were defeated, far from it...

Umm... no, I didn't. My point is that the pros of signing with Virgin completely outweigh the cons. Plus, signing with one of the largest record companies in the world cannot be considered a mistake, or blunder, or whatever you want to call it. If you're a starving garage band trying to make it big, and you get a chance to hook up with Virgin Records, it's a mistake -not- to sign. It doesn't matter that there were issues of disrespect further down the line, etc. The fact is that Billy had the tools, but Virgin made it happen. I think Billy's greatest decision was to sign with them. If he hadn't, who knows where'd he'd be today.

i think Machina as a album was fantastic. as for all this extra crap, its just that its crap. I'm one of the die hard fans from teh early 90's it was my generation, that sent him to the top! but now, i feel like, the pumpkins tried to be something their not with all this machina mystery and crap, i think they woul dhave been better just sticking to the music. The Pumpkins have made me alot of who i am today, and will continute to be there for me like a best friend. I love the pumpkins!

Well, Billy never publicly revealed what the other albums were about like he did with Machina. Maybe they were all conceptual too. If there's a mistake in that, it's only that he strayed from letting his music be ambiguous for the fan's sake. People can relate more to songs if they don't know what they're about, and that's why Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie took off so well. But who in their right mind can actually relate to having a huge rock band that lasted for 13 years, etc, etc, etc, which is what Machina is about, according to Billy himself.

I thought so too, because it was obvious they knew they were breaking up, and certainly if it hadn't of been for pop culture sucking which britney was a product of then pumpkins might still be selling records and still together, but I think even if they were huge pumpkins would've thrown in the towel. Its not about fighting the fight against the britney's, its about making music which is all they ever did and continue to do. So I think the britney comment just showed how bitter he was about the whole thing, even so far as to show that maybe he wouldn't of released machina2 on the internet and 25 vinyl if virgin hadn't of told him it wasnt worth it to them to put it out

He's just trying to be cool, leave him alone.

I think the worst thing Billy did was record adore as it is on the album, and expect so much from the fans. I'm not telling I don't like adore, I love the record. But Billy knew that adore wouldn't be accepted from most of the people, because it's not a "easy to catch" album. In my opinion he had two options: 1) Made adore as it is on the record and say fuck you for those who don't understand; 2) Made adore more "easy", like the live versions, with the normal pumpkin feeling and then expect from his fans.
But Billy tried to get the all the options. He tried to do something that wasn't the normal pumpkin style, and thought he would still catch his fans. And later he came with that line: at least they should see we are trying to do something....

About the Machina mystery:
I think it wouldnt have been as bad if they had something to show for at the time. Instead of letting fans jerk around for 2 years. The animation that will insue looks pretty cool if you look at the trailers, the new intro at sp.com and the intro to gatmog.com
But yeah, I think it was a big mistake to tell fans about it 2 years ago without giving anyone a precise date, and then waiting so fucking long.

As for the Britney thing, I dont think it was that bad. I mean...the news took it out of context. It's not like Billy foretold he'd be taken out of context.

And I totally agree that a whole bunch of you are fucking pansies. All of a sudden everyone comes up with the exact same mistake that Billy pointed out. If billy said their biggest mistake was Flood, a lot more people would be saying "I think Flood was their biggest mistake".

machina was, in my opinion, one of the greatest concepts i've ever seen in rock. it's really on the level of yellow submarine. billy made a character and stuck with that. you don't really need to find out exactly what everything means and what significance the face in the water on one of the plates has. it's about a feeling, to me. then machina 2 took that one step further, and showed somewhat what went into making that album, and what went in to assuming these personas (glass's theme). the mystery (chapters 1-7) seems to be an attempt to explain it to the laypeople, but it still requires a lot of interpretation, and i think the modern fable story ties that together very well.

to come is GATMOG. i expect only the best from this, and i hope it will rock. i think the music on it will be really cool remixes and covers, and i think the concept in general will be totally awesome.

to sum up, leave the man alone. he may have fucked up, but at least he stayed true to himself and to us. and be honest, you like getting your mind fucked with by machina.

Yeah. I'd have to say that Machina doesn't make any sense, and I've come to reject mysticism, so Machina is no longer important to me as a conceptual album. Maybe one day I'll know the true meaning of it, but I don't think the meaning matters.

Well, I know people here have a hard time staying on topic, so I'm going to help you out with that. Unfortunately, I didn't get to post in this thread last time around, so I'll do it now.

Corgan's biggest blunder is, without question, not going to college after high school. Not only is he setting a really BAD example, but you have zero chance of being successful in life if you don't have any formal education. Yes, you can be successful for a few years, but Billy is just now starting to suffer from this for 2 main reasons. One reason is that now he has to rely on other people (managers, accountants, PR, etc.) to do so many things for him, but that's true with alot of musicians. There's a much more serious reason than that.

He's put himself in a position where all he can do now is make music, no matter how bad or how unpopular it gets (and some of it is starting to get pretty bad if you've heard Zwan). Even though he is now way past his prime as far as being a "hit" with the music industry, because he has no education, he is unable to go for a career change or do anything but continue doing what he's been doing. Basically, he's become the typical steelworker or coal miner.

I just wanted to reply because it seems that everyone else has, and I didn't want to be left out...and I think that "Corgan's biggest blunder" was the choice of singles post-MCIS. To Sheila, Crestfallen, & TTT had no commercial potential whatsoever. And since commercial success is the point of singles, then releasing the wrong singles prevented the band's fan base from growing by keeping their music out of the limelight. And while popularity isn't everything, as in it shouldn't be your goal when you're making your music, once the music is made, then why the hell not use that music to reach as many people as possible? Huh? And this reminds me of something--wasn't Jellybelly supposed to be the first MCIS single? If it had been, THAT would have been the biggest blunder, cause we all know what happened with BWBW, and it wouldn't have happened with Jellybelly. Word. Making the Try video what it was was a major blunder. I can't even listen to the song anymore without visualizing that awful video. I think a different video might have given it more popularity, but probably not much. People just weren't playing SP on radio or tv anymore. Although Untitled was played on one radio station here at the beginning of 2001 for a while. I've never seen it on TV.

Before Untitled came out, Try appeared to be their final single/video, and to have it be so shitty and not even have all of the band in it seemed sooo stupid to me.

I have to agree with a few others and say choice of singles...a station here played some songs that would have been much better singles than what were released. Off Machina we heard TEG, SIYL, The Sacred and Profane and IOTM. Off Adore were Ava Adore, Perfect and Tear. I also think the style in which most songs on Machina were recorded was poor. Listening to the Arising versions make me shake my head at half of Machina, knowing what great potential the album had.
