I'd agree that Everything Falls Apart sounds stale, but I love those razor-sharp guitars on Metal Circus, Zen Arcade and New Day Rising. To me, that's Husker Du's sound. The WB stuff is clean, but it's just not the same...

I'd have to say Machina.

Stuff like Pavement's early recordings, Sebadoh III, and GBV's pre-Under the Bushes work shouldn't count. It was intentionally messy and lo-fi. From all the reading I've done about how Pavement recorded Slanted & Enchanted, I'm tempted to say that it's "production" is actually very well done--every bit of that album was deliberately engineered.

Their most 'produced' album is Terror Twilight and it's no coincidence that it sounds the best.

Terror Twilight sucks.

Slanted and Crooked Rain are Pavement's masterpieces.

Metallica- ...And Justice For All
the production on that album is piss poor.

also
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Californication
the highs on that album crackle and it drives me insane. esp. the high vocals on "otherside" but it creeps in at other times too. what a shame.

I'll just lie here for a while, Wet myself, wet my bed-- I've readied it all for her, you know Clean sheets, incense, and lots of fluffy pillows-- Now soiled....
And where's my cigarette? Did you check the bathroom?... The bathtub?... She sleeps there sometimes.... Water cleanses, you know, washes dirt away, makes new.... Maybe she... maybe she... maybe she... maybe... Maybe she swam away....

sadly, machina is what i thought of first...then some of the grittier early 80s REM stuff. but that is more the time it was made, not the choice of production.

There are two that I think of immediately. One, And Justice For All, has already been mentioned, but I'm surprised no one has brought up the Stooges' Raw Power. That's the king of poorly produced albums. Iggy and Bowie fucked that one up good and proper, especially in the mixing stages--the levels are all wrong. The remixed version sounds a bit better, but it's worth hunting down the pre-1997 versions of the album/CD to hear just how bad it originally was.

Jethro Tull's "Aqualung" comes to mind. Even the remastered version doesn't really help that much. It sounds so bland. And also "Too Old To Rock 'N Roll" has an awful sound.

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF RAW POWER, ONE PRODUCED BY BOWIE, Z HANDFUL OF BOOTLEGS AND THE BRUCE ****INSON/IGGY POP PRODUCED 97 REISSUE. BOWIES PRODUCTION IS TERRIBLE ON RAW POWER, AND IT IS WIDELY KNOWN AS A BADLY PRODUCED ALBUM.

Wow, I thought I was the only one who considered it a bad produced album. I really don't know why they hired Rick Rubin to put out an album with the crappiest sound. The songs are good, they deserved something better - but they decided to give them this "analog sound".

The record companys weren't really thinking when they put out the TULL CD issues. A lot of them are not from master tapes, but an inferior source. From what I hear, the Vinyl and the Gold Disc of Aqualung sound pretty good. Don't know, haven't heard them. Still, Aqualung is great album, nonetheless.

Damn, I'm always the only the person who likes Machina. The producing adds LAYERS of SOUND. Which are GOOD. I thought Adore was too sparce until I heard it live, then I appreicated it more.

I kinda have trouble seperating bad production for bad albums (Just glancing at my cds, I see 10,000Hz Legend. Sure Air produced it, but it's the songs that suck).

Just because an album isn't produced to appeal to you doesn't mean it is horribly overproduced. Some of us actually liked Machina. It is layered, but at its best moments also brilliant.

I agree. Loads of Rick Rubin's albums do that.. System of a Down's first album and renegades by R.A.T.M. have the same problem. Rick Rubin sucks.
