Billy sucks at putting tapes together. has there been one tape he's put together (that's leaked) that doesn't have a song that's cut?

Soot & Stars sounds funky without all the reverb. I thought it was time for Spaceboy :-\

Question

weird.
silence from an analog source (like cassette tape) usually shows up as some sort of noise under spectral analysis, but this is just pure absence of sound at the end of soma.
i've attached shots of the 'silence' at the end of mayo and the silence at the end of soma. if the tape ran out on soma, they should look the same since they're both at the end of the tape, but they're not. the 'silence' at the end of mayo is a thin blue line of noise at the bottom of the spectrum. the silence at the end of soma is just that - silence. either the tape ended differently than this recording suggests, or the file was altered before being released.
it looks more like a dat was unplugged while recording or something like that.
and i can't understand why there's so much silence at the end...
anyone else have some ideas about this?
or am i just over-thinking this?

i'm also a bit confused about the way the audio on the left channel always goes in and out. it's like there was a noise gate on that channel or something....

a badly set up noise gate would also explain the "clicking"

hence the need for a "de-clicking" restoration of some tracks

just so nobody thinks that i'm being a bum, i actually am declicking all the tracks as they're released.
but, i'm reaching a point where i need some input.
just how much restoration is too much?
do i make an effort to try to fix the 'noise gated' left channel on qaos?
is it okay to restore gaps of silence?
this is where i usually draw the line. i don't mind removing glitches, but i have a problem with adding sound that wasn't on the original.
on the other hand, the left channel sounds like shit on several songs and tiny gaps of silence can be pretty annoying while listening to a song.
does anyone have thoughts on this?

If a noise gate was used on the original recording, the spectral should still show the tape hiss from the cassette copy. I've been curious about this as well. Definitely seems like there should still be some sort of analog noise in the spectrum during the cut-off sections.

well, there is some analog noise in the noise gated spots.
it's the end of soma that has me wondering.

My thoughts are, to limit "restoration" to very judicious/delicate click+pop removal--and even then, if the click removal leaves a weird artifact (which it often can), then to leave it alone. Noise reduction can very easily diminish the overall quality, so seems like only the annoying pops should be addressed, and everything else left alone. The weird noise gate thing doesn't really bother me much--not anywhere near as much as the pops.

By the way, thanks for de-clicking these. It's a lot of meticulous work, for sure.

do what you think sounds best....
people will keep sharing "un restored" tracks no matter what...

others probably plan on giving a go at restoring all the tracks as well
& sharing them afterwards.....
& letting the mob decide what it wants once it's all done...

i'm sure their will be a 13 re-master
