After reading a post on smashingpumpkins.com about the pumpkins first show in 1988, I feel confident that there is going to be some pregish material played. This quote seems to encourage fans to listen to the 10-5-88 show before the anniversary shows start, maybe for listeners to become more familair with the songs, and indeed see where they have come from.
"So if you haven't already in the past week, give the show another listen and be taken back to a much simpler time in the Smashing Pumpkins career. It was just about the music - no record company to interfere, exploring new music styles, combining soft beauty with heavier, darker soundscapes and leaving audiences confused while at the same time wanting more ... oh its just like 2008, except with a few more (million) fans." On a more obvious note, the tour is celebrating 20 years of the pumpkins music, 1988-2008. For me, 'new' songs live sometimes seem strange, so listening to these songs in '88 may clear a cloudy perception of the material, at least for fans who have never heard them before. Then they may not be scratching their heads, wondering, "what was that song?" Rather, when these would be naive fans hear the first few notes being played, there is that reaction, "Oh! I love that song (from way back when)" I've listened to the 88 show a while ago, but just now started listening again to 'She' from the 88' show and realized how much I absolutely love it. Granted, if a song is good, it's usually good the first time heard, but with pumpkins songs especially, they may take time to grow on. Speaking of 'She', does the lyrics and singing in the chorus remind anyone of the Cure's 'Friday I'm in Love?' Certainly the band has had praises and recognized their influence from the Cure, and I think its apparent in this song. (Portion of 'She' Lyrics) Walk the world, I hear a noise Standing in her voice Sickle in her choice She is everything Monday or Tuesday Wednesday's another game Waiting for Sunday I'm the one she swore she'd never love I'm the one I know she's thinking of She is everything Monday or Tuesday Wednesday's another game Waiting for Sunday She is everything Monday or Tuesday Wednesday's another game Waiting for Sunday (And its not just the mention of days in the week, but the inflection in his voice in the chorus reminded me of the cure song) Just as well, it sounds awesome.
