some of the time. during the intro and the verses and the part leading to the solo, he mutes the E with his thumb when playing the octive notes.

It goes:
---------------------------------
---------------------------------
---9-9---9-9---9---9-9---9-9-9---
---------------------------------
---7-7---7-7---7---7-7---7-7-7---
-0-----0-----0---0-----0-------0-

And there's some open E chords in there too

And by that I mean he's not letting them ring, like seign said when he's playing the actual octave shapes, he's muting the string.

yeah, i think i read that in a guitar world magazine or something similar back in the day. I remember the journalist got on billy because he called it the "pumpkin chord" when in all actuality, jimi hendrix used to do the same thing and they called it the "jimi chord" or something to that effect. I wish i still had the article archived. anyway, if you want to see a good example, just check out the acoustic version on vieuphoria.
