Question would you rather go in half and half on groceries or buy everything you need yourself

in a roommate situation, would it be easier to share everything, or buy it all yourself and have to worry about whose was whose when you needed an egg or a piece of bread for a recipe? would you be strict with payback methods?

in my house...

we buy general shit that we all need. milk, etc, etc.

and then get our own groceries. it's easier that way 'cus we're not all home at the same time and therefore don't necessarily eat at the same time. sometimes we all cook together.

and, no, we're not anal 'bout splitting the bill for shared stuff... it all works out evenly in the end. as long as everyone pulls their weight.

i used to live with this one guy who was so tight... he'd bitcha about ppl using more laundry soap than him. i had to explain that i don't have sugar in my tea/coffee, but still contribute to buying it (we used to add up and split communal-grocery bills in that house).

he was a pain!

My boyfriend and I always always go half and half... But that's a bit different of a situation because we eat almost every meal together anyway...

Try making a communal wallet for food. If either roommate wants something that's reasonable, take it from that wallet. If you only eat steak and your roommate's a vegan, don't try that approach.

Yeah, there's five people in my house and we all share things like dishwasher liquid, condiments (Braggs, butter, ketchup, olive oil, etc), soap, etc. etc., but we don't ever split the 'bill' of buying it because, like TIMb said, it all evens out in the end as long as everyone pitches in and no one is like "No! You can't have that... That's MY stick of butter!!"

here's how it worked when eric and i were living with friends: we'd have mostly communal food. for example, chicken is cheaper if you buy it in "family size". so we'd buy it that way. split the bill. rice, pasta, chicken, couscous, eggs, milk, coffee, cheese, bread, english muffins, popcorn was all communal. venison, veggies, fruits, tea, cookies, etc was by invitation only.

it saved money to be mostly communal. just get a tupperware container of your stuff only. and make a rule that whoever eats the last of a communal product must replace it within a week.

On a few things, there should be sharing but I would go individual on the whole. Someone will ultimately slave for someone else if you don't.

well the background story goes a little something like this:
dana and i are moving in together, and we both drink coke, but she also drinks dr. pepper. me, i'd drink a hot coke before i'd drink a dr. pepper, but other than that we pretty much eat the same stuff.
sene and debra are the ones that go crazy for the fish sticks and coconut shrimp. they also like tuna and easy mac....bleughhg.
this little question popped in my head because dana mentioned we could just go in half and half at the grocery store, which is reasonable because then you don't have to keep up with who bought it last.
i really like the sharing idea because that's the way it is with family, and it's just less stressful than sene coming in the house screaming about a stouffer's $3.00 lasagna i ate since i thought it was mine when i never bitched about spotting her a couple dollars without getting paid back.

Unless you both eat the exact same foods and both eat exactly half of each of the food products purchased, I don't think the whole sharing thing would work out too well. Sharing a few items, such as soda, paper towels, etc., makes sense, but, on the whole, individual is the way to go.

I wouldn't know personally, but I'd imagine that there is truth in this statement.

There is nothing stupider then seeing 4 quarts of milk, 4 tubs of margarine, 4 loaves of bread, 4 bottles of ketchup, etc, in an apartment.

Buy fresh foods and ingredients used to cook whole meals together and individual foods like yogurts seperate. That way if someone needs noodles for casserole or eggs for an omelette there are nor worries.

it depends. once i lived with a moocher who was to lazy to buy milk and was gonna eat my food anyway, so we did half and half. once i lived with a vegan... we didn't do half and half. now i live with my girlfriend so we just go shopping whenever on our own and keep tabs on paper and it usually evens itself out.

depends on who with, but in all roommate situations i've been a part of everyone's bought their own stuff and then shared a few things sometimes, like during all the group cookouts/grilling/baking we did, etc. worked out great.

In a roomate situation, I can see how it would be easier to go half and half on the things that you BOTH eat/drink.

For example, if you buy a case of cokes, split it. If she wants to buy her own Dr Pepper, then she does that individually.

If you both eat bread or toast, then split bread and butter. Same with pasta, milk, eggs, etc. Anything you both will eat. Personal things (such as your own/favorite yogurt or a special soda or a dessert item just for you), then buy those individually and mark your name on it if necessary.
