Default ATTN: Guitar Players

So I decided it would be fun to lay down some tracks onto my computer of my guitar playing. Problem is, im not sure how about I should go about doing it. At this point in time I'm using my small, junk computer mic and playing straight into it. Is there a way to plug the guitar straight into the computer? Should I buy a better mic and play into that? And also, what software would be good to use?

I covered Say It Ain't So just to see what it would sound like. This is the best I could get it to sound. It is, at this point in time, without vocals, drums, or bass. This link may not work. Tell me if it does.

im my experience, you should really always mic your amp if you can. just mess around with pointing your mic at the cabinet different ways, at different angles and different distances while aiming at different parts of the speaker. you're going to get a shitload more versalitlity by micing rather then going direct. plus, the lower frequency response usually gets fucked up a lot when you go direct. it's usually too much and there's little you can do to change it.

So the microphone. I'm using a computer microphone at the moment, and obviously it wasn't meant to do this job. If I was to buy a microphone, how would I go about connecting it to the computer? Is this common knowledge? Am I dumb?

not really, i guess. you shouldn't feel dumb though.

i guess if you're using a computer mic then you're probably using the shitty soundcard that came with your computer too.

Uh, I can't really go into this now because I'm about to run out the door, but I'll check on this thread next time I come back and if anyone hasn't helped oyu yet, I'll contribute.

Get a semi-decent microphone, and then get an adaptor so you can plug it into your sound card, but definately mic the amp.
