Of Love and Corgan

Before she launched her solo career with a self-titled album this year, Melissa Auf Der Maur played with two of the most mercurial and interesting musicians of recent years: Courtney Love of Hole and the Smashing Pumpkin's Billy Corgan. Both challenged her on personal and professional levels. Both were outspoken and intelligent, and both gave her the opportunity to expand her range musically.

On Billy Corgan: "He will always be one of my biggest musical influences. That first album by the Smashing Pumpkins album, ... the impact "Gish" made on my life at 19 years old is part of why I'm doing what I'm doing. Billy's music, whether I had been in that band or whether he'd played that mentor role or not, he was a person I would have been learning from anyway. Beyond his music, the chances he took on me, believing that the girl from Montreal would be the perfect girl for Hole (Corgan recommended Auf Der Maur to Love) -- and me being his only choice to replace D'Arcy (former Smashing Pumpkins bassist) -- his belief in me made a big impression. But ultimately, his work ethic is one of the most impressive work ethics I've ever seen in my life. There's a reason his legacy and his catalog will live on forever, representing that particular generation. He lived and breathed music like I've never seen anyone before."
