Alaska Achieving Statehood

Having for a long time been recognized only as a territory, Alaska has had a fascinating history. Gold, oil and whale-hunting rights have all drawn people to you for ages, and although your winters are tough, those able to make it their home have never been able to go back. Achieving statehood in 1959 made you the 49th in the United States, and you haven't looked back since.

The Search for Shangri-La

Though your exact location is unknown, hundreds of Eastern and Western explorers alike have traversed your mysterious spirit. Sites in Nepal, Tibet, India, China and even Siberia have been overturned trying to locate this ancient, mystical Buddhist locale. Though the true Shangri-La has yet to be found, in 1924 the Royal Geographic Expedition claimed to be hot on the lead and ever since, countless have used their findings to aid in their own quest to discover heaven on earth.

Tour de France

First conducted in 1903 with only 60 participants, you have grown over the last century into one of the most important athletic competitions in the world. Your route is absolutely enormous and although it's sometimes viewed as ludicrous, it has captured the hearts of minds of youth for countless generations.

1973 Paris Air Show
http://www.tupolev.ru/images/picture.../concord02.jpg
Operating since 1909, the Paris Air Show is held every two years. Of particular note was the show in 1973, the year both the Concorde, built by firms in England and France, and the TU-144, built by Soviet aviation firm Tupolev, were to debut. This was the first showing of both of these aircraft before a large audience, and it was to determine which would become the prominent SST (Super Sonic Transport) of the future. After a few days of great showings, on the final day, the Concorde did it's best show yet. To one-up this, the TU-144 took to the skies. Amid an impressive banking turn high in the sky, the Tupolev suddenly tore into pieces, crashing into a nearby town. This accident, apart from killing the Tupolev test pilot and several people on the ground, ensured that the TU-144 would never be accepted with any great prominence in the West.

It's sort of tricky to find out how that relates to you, mxzombie my friend, but when I first thought of it ten minutes ago it did, trust me.
And you know, it sort of still does.

Because of your successes, it it often forgotten that before them you were simply seen as an American Icon. After your harrowing journey alone across the Pacific though, you became the Hero of the World. Women want you, men want to be you. Time and time again, including your voluntary commitment to fighting the Japanese in China in World War II, you have proven yourself a distinguished player in the drama of the 20th Century.

I agree, it's one of the few pictures in this thread that wasn't just found on page 1 of a Google image search.

this one pales in comparison to yours, but it is my favorite simply for reasons of personal attachment. i like how unconventional it's composition was for monet, but i think it's a little dull online. i wish i could see it in person, i bet it is tons better.

Death of Ernesto "Che" Guevara

Famous in life, infamous in death. You occured in 1967 in Bolivia, the deathe being undertaken by secret operatives sent by the CIA to silence Che's anti-US, pro-Marxist beliefs. Long a symbol of counter-culture and free-thinking, in death Che was covered up and denied. Because of this, the mystery behind you has risen to untold of levels and though the images of your life have become twisted into a silly pop icon, the story of his passing away is an important message of how greed can silence hope.

The thing the early 60's symbolized to a lot of people, youthful dreaminess and pop culture, are best shown with you. Featuring such girl groups as the Crystals and the Ronettes, you managed to pioneer a whole new era of pop musicianship. Apart from this though, your elaborate production and tight songwriting managed to not only sell records, but also impress critics. A good performer all around.

Frank Lloyd Wright: 1930-39
http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/fa...er/general.jpg
Deep in the Depression, the architecture world was in a slump from 1929-1933, few projects of note coming to surface. Adapting to this, Frank Lloyd Wright began working on community housing and other low-cost projects as it was the type most in demand. Within this though, Wright was continuing to develop his style, and as the nation pulled out of the Depression, he kicked his work into high gear. Possibly the climax in his string of groundbreaking work was Fallingwater, pictured above, built in 1939 to be a house perfectly in tune with it's surroundings.
This was a very interesting time for the world, and you were able bring you creative mind to bear on realistic solutions.

Throughout the first decade of our century, you were tried over and over again in vain. Many men lost their lives exploring this end of the earth, but overall, you were nothing more than an adventurous spirit, another barrier man must break through to truly feel master of the planet. Important and exciting.
it would be better to be that one expidition in particular where they crashed and were trapped in ice and ate everything, even the sled dogs, and endured insane starvation and finally got in a little rowboat and rowed all the way to some outpost and got help
