Default The good, the bad, and the ugly of my Chicago trip this weekend

Chicago was this weekend, and although it was better than the last two trips combined, it still was a mixed bag.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE GOOD:
Meeting some new people. My sister's friends were quite friendly, even if they do work at Meijers.
The pizza. DEEELICIOUS.
The view from the observation floor in the John Hancock Building. Breathtaking, to say the least.
The street musicians/vendors. Always fun to watch and talk to.
Just not being trapped in Portage for once. That can't be anything but a plus, period.
Getting my picture taken on a hill overlooking Soldier Field. I've always wanted to do that.
Looking back at the Chicago skyline at the end of the trip at nighttime. A good last impression. Definitely made me want to come back someday.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE BAD:

The hotel room. Hotter than hell. And I had to share it with 6 other people. I think I got about 2 hours total of sleep spread over the weekend.

Spending almost $200 on food, souveniers, cabs, trains, beggars, and tourist traps.

Spending the majority of Day 1 wandering aimlessly trying to find out where my sister's friends were supposed to register for the Marathon (McCormick Place), and by the time we were done doing that, it was almost too late in the day to shop anywhere.

Not being able to meet Stacy and Mike (they were in Illini Country down in Champagne for the weekend, go figure, first time I'm in Chicago in 6 years and they're out of town), or Liz (never was able to reach her over the phone), or Alex (I couldn't remember which of the billion Starbucks in Chicago he worked at).

Never being able to eat at the Billy Goat Tavern.

Not finding any good music stores.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THE UGLY:
Spending the majority of Day 2 trying to figure out where the hell my sister and one of our group was. Meg supposedly told us to meet by a statue of Christopher Columbus after the Marathon had ended, and nobody remembered she said this. Then the phone her group had died, so we had no way to contact her. She says she borrowed other people's phones and left voice mails on one of our phones, but Pete either couldn't hear it or we never got it. After searching through the fountain area TWICE (the crowds were huge, because this is were the end of the race was), we gave up and headed back to the train station...and there they were. DAMN IT. At that point, it was once again too late in the day to do anything except eat and go to the Water Tower Plaza (I didn't buy anything).
The aforementioned crowds. Not as bad as the Toronto trip, but I still hate 'em.
Listening to my sister's friend Janelle. She's got a big mouth and likes to be loud. She's nice, just a little overbearing.
Kevin, the guy who drove us to Chicago, looks like Napoleon Dynamite with straight hair.
All those beggars. Really made me sad. At least only one of them tried to swindle me. :-p
Seeing a crazy guy wearing a sign that was trying to explain why Dick Cheney was a Communist spy, mainly because I didn't have any film left to take a picture of it (I had just used up my film).
Not having one more day just to do the shit none of us had time for in two days.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So on a scale of 1-10, I'd give the trip a 6.5.

hey sorry i wasn't in; i was SO busy. i feel like i never sat still, even though i know i did. anyway, you have a nice phone voice if that's any consolation. i thought you might leave a number where i could call you, but that's okay.

sorry your trip here didn't go better, but i think two day Chicago trips are kinda stressful in general. my friend was in Fri evening to Sun morning, and that's just long enough to rush around to a few places, which sucks. anyway, i am happy to hear you were impressed by the bums. they've been in fine form lately. i don't think i've ever seen more. anyway, i'm happy you had a decent time and i hope your next trip is even better.

I've lived in Memphis for 5 years and I've never been to Graceland. Around here they say only tourists visit Graceland.

I had just finished my trip and was exhausted. I think I remember sounding tired. I couldn't leave a # because I don't carry a cell and we weren't ever at the hotel. I tried twice, both times on Saturday: Once at about 1 pm, and then again at 8, when I was at O'Hare waiting for the van back to Hampton Inn.

Oh well.

It's the halfway point between Chicago and Detroit, so I'd say about three hours.

Did you pay the $9.50 to get to the observation deck of the Hancock? If so, you stupid.

Just walk in the south entrance and go to the far right elevator and go to the 96th floor to the bar. It's free and higher than the deck. Silly tourists.

If there was a bar, the way there wasn't readily apparent.

Oh well. Chalk this unneccesary cost under the "UGLY" category.
