I'm just curious.... I'm trying to read up on Catholicism... I was brought up a Southern Baptist... but I'm looking into the Catholic faith. There is just so much to take in all at once, I don't even know if I'm looking into the right things for information. I don't really even know where to start for more information.
Does anyone have any suggestions? ------------------ ~*Sarah Kimberly*~ ...and the tragic and romantic ascent... AIM: Gazing Iscariot |

the way i look at it is this:
all religion is based on the same principles. the customs and activies in each was created so humans could have a tangible understanding of why the hell we are here and for what. it's just so we can have something at our human level of understandingm that we can grasp and feel secure. imho that's why the more my family pushes me into it, the more i want out.

I really don't understand why someone would want to be part of any kind of organized religion. I am all for faith. We all need something to believe in. But, the memories of going to church as a child, it has forever burned this image of fakeness into my head. It's like listening to pop radio. I want nothing to do with it, and don't see any reason for anyone else with any common sense to either. Study religion, find your faith or don't, but the idea of going to "Church on Sunday" is laughable to me.
Then again, if you feel the need to be a part of this, I am sure there is something out there. Sorry, I am ranting, you asked for imput, I'm giving imput, though I am sure it's not what you wanted. It's all been said before. p.s. I am slightly drunk. p.p.s. I know it is seven am. |

Yes, I've attended quite a few Catholic services... I really like them, it's just different from what I was used to.

Lets see if I can't explain this rationally...
I was raised Southern Baptist... attended church every Sunday morning/night/wednesday. About 5/6 years ago, after my Great Grandmother died, my mother and I stopped attending church there... (she was the main reason we attended that church) so we visited other churches around town to find another church to join... really to no avail. We found that the people were snobby, greedy, fake... concerned more about social appearances than faith... So we stopped going to church altogether. I still believe what I was taught... what I was brought up believing but I can't say that religion/faith is more than a convience to me now... Anyway... when you start talking about marriage with someone who has strong faith... who is involved in his church and is very spiritual... especially if they're a part of a religion such as Catholicism... you run into questions and situations you were never really concerned with or asked while you were just dating. Ignore any idea of wanting to do this to make him happy... what about our children? Would you raise your children with mixed beliefs so that they didn't really know what to believe or what was true? It's just such a scary decision that I never really thought about making or concerned myself with, because we were never really at that point in our relationship. We always left religion to the side for convenience... I'm afraid that can't be done anymore. And as he said... it really has nothing to do with him... If I decide on this, it would be for myself... for my faith and for my relationship with God... I'm genuinely curious about this faith... It's just so confusing because I don't really even know where to start looking. Sorry for the long rant... he's told me what he can about Catholicism... I need to look up and research it on my own now. The problem is, I'm unsure of where to start looking for information that would help me know what the church is about, why they believe what they believe and where it all started. Southern Baptist ------> Roman (?) Catholic. Can't say I've ever heard of it or seen it done before. Good luck.

Personally, i think mass is simply symbolic. And what's wrong with practicing your faith? I suppose different people can take religious services in a different way, and get different things out of them. Its not for everyone, thats for sure. And theres nothing wrong with that. As for the original question, if you want info, the best thing to do is go talk to a Catholic preist. Just tell him your situation, and Im sure he will be more than happy to give you some info and answer any questions u have.

In the past two years I went from Presbyterian to agnostic. I just feel like the Bible is a bunch of stories and that is it. It is a good book to base your life around but I do not really believe it's divine. And I believe that religon was created some 4000 years ago by the heads of civilizations to control the masses, and it is still this way.

Go to the bookstore. Pick up a book called "the Catechism of the Catholic Church". These are all the things a Catholic is supposed to believe, and is imho one of the most unintentionally hilarious books of all time. After reading this you can have a good idea if you want to take part in it or not. After 18 years of Catholicism I think it's a pretty fucked up religion that has irrelevant practices and more symbolism than spirit. But I will tell you it's worth checking out, simply to ease your curiosity.
Oh, and to answer the original question: I went from Catholic -->non denominational Christian --> spiritual non religious theist --> agnostic atheist (meaning with what is presented to me now, I'm atheist, but if I get presented with something to convince me otherwise, I may have some level of theism)
