Can someone please explain the difference between a Republican and a Democrat?

I guess I sort of get it now. Thanks. Sorry for being a smart ass, it's what I do. "Progressive" can be seen as a threat spreading immorality when the morals at hand are based upon traditional Christian thought? Maybe? So anything in that vein is decried.
